although we did give them pennant as well so they may not be to happy with us.

I'm certain we won't pay £20m for Silva, Rafa would go and sign someone else for around £15m max if the price goes that high. Barry will go for £8m at the very most with a year left on his contract, so we'd have £12m left from the £35m. Right back for a couple of million and £10m to spend on a back-up striker? I'd take that.

This is all in the realms of FM though - actual prices are bound to vary, and it all depends on what the kitty is to start with. Rafa and the yanks are the only ones who really know that...

If that happens, welcome to another round of 'Rafa couldnt get his top targets and thats why we cant win the league'.

Better to pay it for Silva and then get the other players later - rather than spend £15m instead on someone who he doesnt really want and then sell that flop next year for £5m.

There is a thread on TLW where they think Johnson is a done deal. I'm not Johnsons biggest fan but I would be prepared to go along with signing him. It's also mooted that Rafa would like to loan Darby out to see what he can do but can't because he needs English players in his squad to meet the CL criteria signing Johnson would fix this.

I've said before that they must be a buy out clause in Johnsons new contract probably triggered if 1 of the top 4 bid £8-10 mill for him, why else would he sign one around the Jan transfer window??

So if they still owe us for Crouch we can probably spend £5 mill on England's right back in the World Cup or whatever ****ing tournament is coming up because he will have nailed down the spot by then

I have a theory, could Rafa have his eye on Johnson as cover for both Kuyt AND Arbeloa? Johnson has been playing in a more attacking role at Pompey recently, has pace and some skill and the occasional eye for goal, yet can do a job at RB too obviously. Possibilities no?

A year too soon I reckon. I think he'll do with him what he did with Insua this year. Have Arbeloa plus a new signing as our main right-backs, but give Darby a game when he can, with a view to him becoming a main squad player in 2010/11.

I like the look of Darby but agree maybe a season to early, Deggan yes him, From what I have heard and read Rafa is prepared to give him another season and to be fair he hasn't had much luck with injuries has he?.When I first saw him in a pre-season last year I was impressed now if he turns out to be a hit we could save the money that is touted about for Johnson and spend it elsewhere,

Benny has had a terrific latter part of the season so do we gamble and use him more as a option to nick that goal or provide a chance , we must be realistic here we dont have mega bucks to spend ,Deffo need another striker though ,Babbel IMO has had his chance and should provide some decent money or even part of a swap , Lucas is another that could be used as bait because I think his style is ideal for Spanish or Italian leagues and I think Barry would be a better option , Of course this depends on the Alonso situation he MUST stay IMO

Reckon if we sign Johnson Arbeloa will be cover for CB if needed, it's only really in an emergency that a 4th cb will be needed.
