Gerrard: I hope United win Champions League

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has surprisingly revealed he hopes Manchester United beat Barcelona in Wednesday’s Champions League final.

Speaking to local press, Gerrard said: “I hope it’s a very good game from a neutral point of view,”

“I’ll be watching the game and hope there is a lot of entertainment. It’s obviously a difficult question. But I’ve got a lot of good friends who play for Manchester United so I hope they win, although obviously I’m sitting on the fence.”

Liverpool and Manchester United share one of the greatest and fiercest rivalries in English football, but it seems Gerrard’s affinity for some of his England colleagues such as Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand have led him to back the English league champions.

At times like this i wonder, Do the players that get £120.000 a week really have as much Passion as the fans that pay to see them?

That's a bit excessive but I'm going to burn his shirt when I get home.

In all honesty he should not have said anything else apart from "I hope it is a great game". If pressed as to his choice of winner he should have said "what do you think.. (smirk)". End of.

haha i wouldn't worry too much about - he gave the easy answer probably so he get out of the interview and go home with no ****.

Could u imagine the field day the press wouldve had, esp follwoing the fact rafa congratulated man u the club and not specifically ferguson, if he had said

"i hate the ****ing stuffy manc cunts, thought they got lucky in the league, and i'll piss myself f barca stuff them"

there would have been uproar, and no doubt knowing this country, he would have been hauled in front of the FA to describe his actions and fined for bringing the game into disrepute.
i own everton fans on the internet....that's what i do

Of course they don't. We as fans have one team and stick with them till we die. For most players they don't/can't have that mentality. As a fan I can say hand on heart I'd never set foot in old trafford let alone pull the shirt on, yet if I was a pro aged 21 and Utd came begging offering thousands and other clubs weren't interested, I'd have a dilema on my hands. Its a short career. Thats why I think fans can be a little harsh on players moving to rivals.

Saying that there's no excuse for Gerrard to want Utd to win. He should know by saying this it'll piss Liverpool fans off.

Dunno, he's said the same thing i've been saying to my Manc mates, and it's got them totally confused...means that if they do win, i won't get grief, but if they lose, i may have a little gloat...will have a little gloat
