John Terry makes plea for Jamie Carragher return to England squad

    From The Times
    June 6, 2009

It said something about the paucity of top-class English central defenders yesterday when John Terry offered Jamie Carragher as a solution to a growing problem that could have devastating consequences for Fabio Capello’s plans for the World Cup finals next summer.

The England manager holds Carragher in a similarly high regard, but, having already made three unsuccessful overtures towards the Liverpool defender, he is unlikely to follow the captain’s lead by urging him to come out of retirement once again.

Capello’s first-choice pairing of Terry and Rio Ferdinand is up there with anything that will be on show in South Africa, but there is no guarantee that they will remain fit, particularly in an intense tournament at the end of a long season.

Terry and Ferdinand will have started together in only five of Capello’s 14 matches in charge after today’s World Cup qualifying match against Kazakhstan, in which England go in search of a sixth successive win in six games in group six. This in itself demonstrates that they cannot be relied upon next summer.

In recent years, England’s stock of centre backs has been the envy of the world — it took Terry an age finally to oust Sol Campell, for example — but no longer. Capello wears the look of an elder son whose inheritance has already been spent.

Campbell no longer has the pace that is required at the highest level, a series of injuries have effectively ended the international careers of Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate and Carragher chose to exile himself as a result of frustration over limited opportunities and seemingly endless travel.

Matthew Upson is likely to partner Terry against Kazakhstan this evening, in the absence of Ferdinand with a calf injury, but neither the West Ham United defender, Joleon Lescott nor Phil Jagielka, both from Everton, have shown that they belong at the highest level. Terry admitted as much yesterday, by effectively issuing an SOS for a man who retired after winning his 34th cap while playing at right back against Brazil two years ago.

“I think we could do with Carragher back in the squad,” Terry said. “That’s down to Carra to come back out of retirement. We all understood his frustration, but we’d all like him to come out of retirement.

“I spoke to Carra at the time, but it’s his decision. I don’t want to sit here and speak for him. Going into the World Cup, it’d be great if he did come back and make the competition even more difficult for all of us.

However, there are other options. “There’s still Matty [Upson], who everyone’s speaking highly of, and he’s had a very good year. Joleon’s done very well again and Gary Cahill has come into the squad. It’s down to Carra to come out and make a statement, really.”

Capello claimed to be unconcerned, although his actions speak louder than his words because calling up King for the recent friendly international against Slovakia was hardly a ringing endorsement of his existing squad.

Despite the lack of personnel for the position, the Italian will not repeat the mistakes of Sven-Göran Eriksson, who took David Beckham and Wayne Rooney to the previous two World Cups when they were unfit. “If you’re not fully fit, this manager doesn’t care who you are, he’ll leave you behind,” Terry said. “He’s got that ruthlessness about him.”

Capello’s only dilemma this evening revolves around who to play on the right wing, with Theo Walcott

likely to return for the first time in eight months — despite recent indifferent form for Arsenal — not least because Shaun Wright-Phillips has been struggling to shake off a knee injury.

Robert Green will make his first start in England’s other problem position, with Capello hoping that the West Ham United goalkeeper will be able to put sufficient pressure on David James, who is suffering from a neck injury. If James had retired from international football after being exiled by Steve McClaren, England really would be in trouble.

I'm sure Carra said he would return in an emergency situation. He's at the very least the third best centre back in England behind Rio and Terry. I think if Capello had a word and gave him some assurance of third choice (dependant on maintaining form) then I'm sure he'd consider a return.
    Forwards.......

I think Carra would only come back if it was truly an emergency situation and he was guaranteed to play. And then as he has himself admitted, he'd be under huge pressure to perform.

Having said that, if Terry or Ferdinand were ruled out of the tournament and Carra was offered a place in the side he'd be a fool not to push pride aside and take it. He won't ever get the chance to play in a World Cup again, after all.

Carragher was treated disgracefully, overlooked constantly by a manager who clearly showed him no respect. I think his chosen path was honourable and it was a decision made for the good of Liverpool, not a selfish one.

Carra needs to look after himself for us - **** England, concentrate on LFC

It's a fair point but if there is a call when the World Cup comes around I would expect him to consider it (and more than likely go).

I made the same a while back and got slated for it. England for once have a real chance in next years world cup, and although not ideal for LFC, Carra would be a fool not to consider going (if certain assurances were made).

Not many players can boast having a World Cup winners medal in their collection.

Personally, I hope he doesn’t and England fail to make it out of the group stages.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

firstly - surely every englishman wants England to win the world cup! - now i ain't a 'england fan' as such, and my feelings towards the national side are indifferent, and like everyone on here, yes club defo comes before country - but come next summer, i have no shame in saying that yes i will prob jump on the england bandwagon and would certainly celebrate if we won the world cup! be mad not too!!

With regards Carragher I totally back his decision for international retirement - like so many others before him who have retired for international football eg paul scholes my understanding for the reasons of retirement from international football is not so much that they don't want to play in the world cup! but more that they don't want to be getting called up for ****ty friendlies and wank qualifying games against luxembourg during the course of the season!

in fact - i seem to remember paul scholes talking about this, and syaing that as a result of retiring from international duty he was able to relax and spend more time with his family during the season and as a result he dedicated his time to his club which has prolong his career - it's a no brainer really - i am sure that at the time there was talk of pulling scholes out of retirement and getting him back in for england as he had found some form/fitness and he laughed it off saying the reason he has found form/fitness is because he no longer has to go off for england duty anymore, and if he did he would soon lose the form/fitness and everyone would be saying he isn't good enough for the squad ! - one could argue this would be the case with carra

But i'd have no complaints, and i'm sure carragher would say yes if - come the end of the next season, england are short, and Capello calls him up and says can you come the world cup for us I promise u will play!! - what carragher (and prob every liverpool fan) doesn't want to do imo is say "ok i will come out of retirement" now - and then end up having to play in the qualifiers/friendlies/warm up games between now and the world cup which would interfere with Liverpools season!

bizarre! - i can't be the only one!!

I am not suggesting you have to love england or support them with passion - and as I say i am not an English fan, i can't stand some of the things associated with supporting england, and i defo won't be painting my face in a st george's cross or driving round with a flag on my car but........if for example England are in the world cup finals against brazil i will be going the pub, getting pissed and hoping england win! surely eif it comes down to it - world cup final england vs brazil, every english man must want or should as say at the very least prefer England to win! - for the same reasons i'd want england to win the ashes, England rugby to win the world cup, team gb to win at the olympics, europe to win the ryder cup etc etc

Not sure if that was in response to my post, but I'll be supporting Ireland, Spain, Argentina in that order.

Me neither, but just think that now that they have a capable manager in charge and with Stevie G likely to be at the peak of his career, anything could happen.

I don’t think they will win it as other teams appear stronger, but if I was Carra and was offered the chance to go then I’d be thinking that they have a fair chance and it would be worth a shot.
