    Degen...

Is he still a viable option for us? I mean, in all honesty he has had horrendous luck with injuries and not even had half a chance to show us what he is all about.

With all this talk about Arbeloa not being good enough (personally I totally disagree) and signing a player like Johnson, are we overlooking what we already have?

Personally I would not make the RB spot a priority this summer. I would go all out with my budget for that world class creative attacking player in the David Silva mould, save the RB spot for Arbeloa and get the medical team to work their socks off to get Degen up and running.

Maybe he can do a job for us in some games as he is clearly more naturally attack minded than Arbeloa. What do you think?

I really had forgotten all about him.
      .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

Didn't actually realise what his injury's were - after the initial broken ribs and punctured lung after colliding with Hyypia, he sustained 2 successive broken metarsals. How unlucky is that? He must not have played more than 90mins for the 1st team in the year since he's been here.

His record for injuries with his previous teams isn't so good if i recall either.

it was only his last season at dortmund that he had really bad luck with injuries

I don't think we can rely on Degen - too injury prone and we have no idea how long it would take him to acclimatise to the PL. We were lucky this season but we are already down one experienced defender for next year and I wouldn't want to have Carra as the only cover who has played a decent number of games at right back.

I kind of agree that Johnson is very over priced and we shouldn't be looking to put that amount of our budget into what is not an area of desperate need in terms of the first XI. I would love us to find someone who could add a real aggressive attacking edge from the fullback areas but I really can't think of anyone of the requisite standard to improve the first team.

In the unlikely event that another team comes in for Degen I think he'd be shipped out. But the club has invested a lot of time and money so far in somebody who hasn't yet given anything back so it's worth keeping him on for a season.

Arbeloa/Degen/Darby/Carra is weaker than our set of options on the left but I think it's good enough for another year if we're penny pinching.

I think Arbeloa has had a decent season, there are other areas of the team that need strenthening much more than right back. For me we need to sort out a creative wide player and another forward, once we have them in the bag we should consider options at right back.

Spending £15m on Johnson would be a mistake, IMO he's not an improvement on Arbeloa. Degen, Darby and Carragher are all capable of covering there if needed

From what I remember of him with us (reserves mainly) he's actually been quite dangerous going forwards. He could make the difference against hard to beat teams like Stoke. Needs an injury free run, but I could soon be starting a fan club for him if he stays long enough.

I think he deserves to be given a chance if and when fully fit.

He's had a great career, especially when you look at the work to money ratio.

Get rid of him. The one time I saw him, at Spurs earlier in the season, he and Dossena gave the two worst full back displays I've ever seen by Liverpool. And when you consider we have had the likes of Traore, Riise, Bjornebye, Josemi, Tanner, Kvarme, Dicks, Song etc playing in those positions, that's really saying some thing.

Yeah but how much time did he have to get match-fit and epl experience under his belt beforehand? None.

Give him time and a few more chances, if he is not up to scratch only then should we sell him. Bit harsh to get rid of a player who has not had the chance to prove himself.
