Parry to head inquiry into dodgy bets

Rick Parry, the outgoing chief executive of Liverpool FC, is to head a new unit aimed at cracking down on illegal betting in sport.
Parry has been appointed by Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe to chair an expert panel who will look at toughening up rules and looking at the scale of the problem.
Parry said:‘Integrity and sport must go hand-in-hand, and anything which threatens that bond of trust has to be stamped out.
‘The panel have a wealth of experience and knowledge.
I’m confident we can build on the work already done to ensure we have the toughest possible approach to corruption — protecting and preserving the reputation of sport.’
The panel will include representatives from the betting industry, police, players, fans, sports governing bodies, the legal profession and the Gambling Commission.
It will also look at how suspicious betting patterns are identified, and will report back within six months.
Sutcliffe said: ‘We cannot be complacent and need to act now to prevent this becoming a real threat to the integrity of sport.
