I'm not sure that is right, if Barry said I only want to join Liverpool then Villa had the option of selling to us or losing him for nothing in 12 months.Originally posted by magicalbarnes View PostRafa is wrong to blame Barry for this.
The fact is that Barry wanted to play for Liverpool but Villa were not prepared to sell to Liverpool.
Man City simply said to Villa 'whatever Liverpool are prepared to pay - we will pay more'. That is nothing to do with Barry as we were his first choice. From Villa's point of view they wanted as much money for their asset as they could get, regardless of weather they sell to Liverpool, City or Accrington Stanley!
Villa can accept any bid they like, all Barry had to say was no thanks, not interested in talking to them - or go talk to them and turn the move down.
This lies squarly with Barry chasing the money in WC year, didn't have the faith in his ability to play regularly with us and was scared he'd lose his place in the England teamThe King was back for a short while. Long live The King.

Eh?Originally posted by carheex View PostI still can't see what he has done wrong. He had 2 choices: Stay at Villa or accept a new challenge at City. He did not have the option of joining LFC!!
We put a bid in of £15m a while back, Citeh put a bought him for £12m. I'm sure that we must have made a bid and that it must have been accepted by Citeh otherwise Rafa wouldn't be saying this.
Barry obviously chose money (wages) over the CL football he claimed he wanted when only ourselves were in for him previously.
Nobody thinks all players must want to play for LFC, but when you make a public statement that you want move for european football, you don't then move to a club which isn't in the CL. If he'd gone to Arsenal, Utd, Chelsea etc, there would be no argument.
"If Gerrard continues to play up front, leaving this lack of creativity and intelligence in Midfield, the season WILL be over by Xmas."
I still don't think we'll finish in the top 4 this season."

Ill informed comments as usual. Our bid was not accepted (in fact, I'm not sure that we've even made a bid for at least 6 months since our last offer was turned down and we couldn't afford to improve on it) and a contract was not discussed or offered to him. Therefore he did NOT choose City over us.Last edited by carheex; 10-07-09, 03:30 PM.

For the most part I agree that Carheex is talking absoloute rubbish, but I do not think we had a bid accepted for Barry.
Either way, sources close to Barry have stated that the reason he did not wait around for Liverpool was because Rafas idea was to play him as a LW. He obviously wants to play CM to assist in his England WC squad chances.
That said, in normal circumstances it is clear that any player who chooses City over Liverpool/Man Utd/Arsenal or even Chelsea is doing it purely for the money. They are not exactly making signings that would walk into side of a top 4 club. Useful players, but not world class.
Any player who joins has to accept that they will be 2-3 years from challenging seriously for the title. LFC are in that position now.Forwards.......

Thanks, I think!!
I challenge anyone here to find any kind of evidence which supports the claim that Villa accepted bids from us & City and that he chose City over us. I'm amazed at how many people jump on the bandwagon without worrying about a small matter like facts.
It's clear to me that Rafa is bitter that he was unable to get Barry. It doesn't change my opinion of him and I'm not bothered that we haven't got him. He's above average but certainly not good enough to take us to the next level required to win the league.

I've seen him say he was just happy someone came in with a bid and didn't want to haggle about the fee. Not seen any talk about where he would play."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."
