Rafa wants Liverpool FC to attack at home next season

Jul 11 2009 by Tony Barrett, Daily Post

RAFAEL BENITEZ believes attack will be the best form of defence for Liverpool as they bid to turn Anfield into a fortress in the coming season.

Seven home draws were the main reason why the Reds were unable to wrestle the league title from Manchester United’s grasp in the last campaign and Benitez is now looking to create an increased spirit of adventure in his side this time around.

The Reds boss believes new signing Glen Johnson will prove pivotal to his new philosophy with his ability to raid forward from a full back position.

And he also reckons the ball carrying ability of Daniel Agger will help his team turn defence into attack, particularly in fixtures when Liverpool’s opponents are employing negative tactics.

“We want to improve our power in attack, this is our idea,” said Benitez.

“There have been games in the past we have played with three centre backs and two offensive full backs, it depends on the game.

“But normally we play with a line of four in defence because this suits the way we play on most occasions.

“We were talking last season about the draws we had at home and when teams play really deep against you, you need quality in the full back and central defensive positions.

“When we talk about Daniel Agger scoring goals and using the ball well it is because we know that these qualities are necessary if you want to turn the draws into wins.”

Liverpool’s preparations for the forthcoming season will step up tomorrow when the first team squad travels to Switzerland for training.

They will play their first pre-season friendly against St Gallen on Wednesday.

Meanwhile new boy Johnson’s versatility could be in for an early test.

With Brazilian full-back Fabio Aurelio out for a couple of months after knee surgery, Benitez temporarily lacks an experienced left-back.

But in only his second training session, right-back Johnson was tried out on the left.

He said: “There is a lot of versatility to my game, I can play in different positions.

“At the end of last season I was even playing off the front two at Portsmouth as an attacker. That may have been a one-off, but I did enjoy it all the same.

“I can play on the right of midfield, and I feel comfortable there.

“In my younger days I was a striker and at West Ham I played a lot in central defence.”

How about bringing in some more attacking players then...
Brandt - Keita - Van Dijk - Sessegnon

Like Johnson's attitude, seems not bothered about where he plays
      * The above is posted in my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

It is pleasing to see Johnsons willingness.

It seems clear for a while that Rafa has been trying to get us to play out more from defense. Although Dossena last season wasn't a huge success and Agger suffered a lot of injuries. I wish Carragher could be persuaded to play shorter balls sometimes to allow other player who are more capable of starting attacks to have possession.

Kinda makes sense but I think he is waiting to see what happens with the Alonso and Mascherano situations - if we get big money for one or both of them then our whole transfer policy this summer may change completely...

Well, a few of us were saying this a good 12 months ago, but better late than never. Let's hope it actually happens.

Well we attacked **** loads against the likes of Stoke etc and usually had 20-30 shots to their one. We just need to create better chances or have Torres fit.

I think Johnson will be a great addition and add some real attacking possibilties down the right. Him and Kuyt seem ideally suited to play together.

Just Silva in now and i'd be fairly happy.

We did against Stoke and Hull, less so against WHU, Fulham, City and Everton if i remember correctly. And we kinda seemed to get nervy and cautious against Hull after we'd got it back to 2-2, when we needed to push on, because they were running out of steam and the win was there to be had.

And whilst Keane was ****e, leaving an expensive striker on the bench when we're chasing a winner, was really frustrating.

If he was ****e, he deserved to be on the bench no? No argument as to why a £20m striker was on the bench.

I think his point wasn't that he was on the bench unreasonably more that he should have come off it. I happen to disagree but that's a different argument.

So he shouldn't have been on the bench then, he may have phrased it better.

Especially over things that were debated to death last season.

So why spunk a huge amount of money on him in the first place then?

Bit of a hefty mistake from Rafa, no?
