WHEN Ian Ayre took over as Liverpool’s commercial director two years ago he didn’t need telling what huge potential there was for the club in Asia.

Having spent 15 years living on this vast continent he had seen for himself the passion and devotion of its football supporters – and in particular a deep love for Liverpool Football Club.

”Having lived in Malaysia, Hong Kong and China nobody is more aware than me of the power of Liverpool Football Club and of football generally in Asia,” he said. “Commercially we have a genuine opportunity to do really well here.

“The big difficulty was choosing where to go. Thailand is a great example of a market where we have lots and lots of fans but there are plenty of others.

“It’s always difficult deciding where to go on tour because we have so many fans all over the world.

“But by choosing Thailand and Singapore we captured most of South East Asia and made it possible for fans from other countries to come and see the team.

“Both countries are traditional hot-beds of support for Liverpool and I know how excited everyone has been waiting for us to arrive.

“We’ve had a fantastic welcome. We are very excited to be here and are very much looking forward to our stay.”

One challenge has been ensuring the balance is right between playing and commercial commitments.

With the new Premier League season just four weeks away, every day counts and the Reds are embarking on early morning and evening sessions over here to avoid the midday heat.

“I’ve been liasing directly with Sammy Lee, who has been liasing directly with Rafa,” Ayre said.

“When they chose when they wanted the players to be training we planned the rest of the itinerary from there. We know how crucial this period is for Rafa and his staff.

“The two games will be great occasions, especially as the promoters of the tour have recreated the Kop end at both stadiums.

“A lot of work has gone into the planning of this tour, but the reward will be when the players run out to packed stadiums in both countries over the next few days.”

Dirk Kuyt and Kenny Dalglish are set to coach local youngsters today and that’s just one of a number of events planned.

“We will be running a kids programme with open training sessions to try and show people what we do and how we do it,” said Ayre. “We will also be creating a foundation which we will contribute to and our partners will contribute to.

“The important thing is that when our plane lands back in Liverpool there will still be things going on in our name over here which we can continue to support.”

bet you Kenny is loving being back

Unless Claire Rourke floats yer boat, or Rafa gets you hot, then you should be ok.

Sawasdeee Khrab would be much more polite and appropriate, as would their (Durks in particular) Whay being a little higher and closer his nose, it would show more respect to the recipients.
