think he gets a lot of undeserved stick from a lot of fans. i hope he has a good season and he can step up to help fill a sizeable gap

This thread is quite funny, last summer people were on here saying how ****e Alonso was and how Lucas had displaced him towards the end of the season. Now Xabi is going Lucas is no where need good enough

He is OK and can do a job for us, him and Mascher in the middle is pretty solid.

But I don't for one second think we will start the season with Mascher / Lucas and Gerrard as are only midfield options.

He has the right mentality and work ethic, if you can mould that (ala Kuyt) we could have a decent little player on our hands.

I think he'll have a great season and score a fair few goals. From the bits of pre-season I've seen he seems to be really eager to get in the box and is more confident. Would obviously rather keep Xabi but if he wants out then **** him.

I like the way he always supports the man on the ball. He doesn't hide if any player needs an outlet. He can do that because he has an excellent touch whereas a less talented player would be more nervous about losing the ball. His tackling is a bit iffy but his short passing game is very good. We haven't seen much of his long passing game but I have a lot of faith in him.

The comparison with Xabi doesn't do him any favours because Xabi has just had a cracking season. There's less of a difference between Lucas and the Xabi of the previous two seasons.

I think there's some hope with Spearing.
I've never seen him put a foot wrong when he gets a chance. Plessis, San Jose etc look out their depths in the first team - I dont think Jay does.

I remember Steve Heighway saying he was ready for the first team about 3 years ago.
He's the only one coming through who spots a pass - he has a decent football brain

If Lucas is to make it at Liverpool then it will be this season, anyone agree?

He's not as bad as people make out but he has to really put himself about, help control the midfield and stamp his authority on a match. He has the technical ability to succeed, whether that's enough we'll soon find out.

By the same rational if you took a Ferrari, dropped sugar in the tank and slashed all the tyres a Fiat Uno would compare to it performance wise.

Guarantee the majority of these people knocking him were probally saying Carra was not good enough back in the Day or laughed at the suggestion he could be a CB. I am more than happy with his progression and performances .. to compare him to Xabi is unfair I think not many players in the world compare to Xabi at what he does ... but players even world class ones sometimes move on .. you just have to deal with it .. I knew Xabi was off this season all along... I hoped he would stay but my gut told me that the season just gone would be his last. As far as Lucas goes the lad is a Brazilian International .. playing for a place in what has been one the top3 centeral midfields in the world in my opinion for the past number of years ... Alonso, Gerrard, Sissoko on form, Masher ... you try and shine in that company .. no ****ing cake walk ... I distinctly remember some truly excellent performances last year were Lucas was obviously man of the match .. yet the great knowlegdable fans gave it to the usual suspects .. yeer Stevie G was ace for me ... Lucas ehh I suppose he was alright .. Bollix

I don't think Lucas is bad at all, he's a decent squad player who occasionally looks more than decent.

However comparing him to Xabi as a direct replacement is taking ot a bit far. Way too early to talk of him in those terms and if we try to rely on him to make that switch we could be in trouble.

Stats are not your friend in this instance. If you take away Xabi's penalties, Lucas scored more goals than him last season. And if you take away Xabi's tap to SG for the free kick, he has the same # of assists as Lucas?!?!?
