Which is why we are looking to get another defender in. However the problem with buying another attacker is the market and finding one who is willing to not spend a lot of time on the bench.

I don't want to seem as through I'm going around in circles but we should have more money the Johnson and Aquilani fees should have been covered by the outgoings. Generally we have a summer budget of ~£15-20m and we should have a similar fee left from the sale of Keane. Even taking conservative side of those values we should have ~£30m to spend

Liverpool may have missed the chance to end Premier League title drought

Under normal circumstances, after a summer in which the purchases of Glen Johnson and Aquilani have been all but offset by sales, Rafael Benítez would be only too keen to point out such “facts”. For whatever reason, he has toed a diplomatic line, not making an issue of the fact that he has had to break even in the transfer market.

The frustration for Liverpool is that Benítez might only have needed a little support from Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr to effect the final shift in the balance of power, but the Americans’ priority this summer has been to pay the interest on the debts that they brought on the club. Great work, guys. And while we’re at it, how’s that stadium coming along?

Under the terms of the refinancing package in place when Benitez signed a five-year contract in March, £20m was to be made available for team strengthening by club owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks.
The £16m spent on Glen Johnson has been recouped by the sales of Robbie Keane, Alvaro Arbeloa, Sebastien Leto, Jack Hobbs and Paul Anderson. Benitez is also £10m in profit after Xabi Alonso’s £30m move to Real Madrid and the arrival of Alberto Aquilani from Roma for £20m. He should, therefore, still have £30m slushing around in his transfer kitty – but it is clearly not the case given the constraints he is now working under.
It prompts the burning question whether the American owners have used part of that money, or plan to, in a bid to help whittle down the club’s debt from £290m to £230m as agreed under the terms of last month’s new refinancing deal.

A striker and the whole bench for starters!! We have no players to turn to if Plan A isn't working.

Bringing Voronin or Ngog on during whilst 0-0 or 1-0 down will hardly put fear into the opposing defenders.

Who though? Will they accept being on the bench? Will they be affordable?

^ Thats the whole problem, Rafa cannot afford peanuts because of the clowns that own the club. Newcastle will prob spend (Net) more than us this window.

I think that is a bit unlikely since they have nothing but sell.

I also think you are also not acknowledging how over inflated the market is at present.

You don't even have to win a championship every year to draw the fans. You just have to show you're really trying.
                    Tom Hicks.
I feel that what the owners are doing now is just this, pretending to be really trying, but the fans are not as Thick as they thought. It does not matter if the market is inflated or not when you have empty pockets.

This is so ****ing frustrating. Every year we are missing something. This year, we seem to be so close yet through one circumsatance ir another have to sell one of our best players. His replacement may or may not turn out better in the long run, but we'll have to wait for him to be fit & then bed in.

Our weaknesses largely have not been addressed & whilst there is a prime oportunity to capitalise on Scum being weakened, we seem powerless to add that much needed extra player or 2. Every year our key player Gerrard gets older & we do next to nothing to provide that last missing piece of the jigsaw.
                      3rd place. Worst champions ever.

Whether we sign anyone or not its not time to throw in the towell.

Aren't Utd fans wondering where the £80M has gone? Owen & Valencia are hardly like for like with Ronaldo & Tevez.

                        Arsenal haven't bought big.

Chelsea have signed a russian player. the last big name one at spurs didn't set the league on fire. otherwise its the same old. yes they have essien back granted.

But we have Johnson who I really think will have a blinding season. I reckon he may even have end up with the highest amount of assists at the club come May. Then we have the italian who is very highly rated, he may even prove better than Alonso who although was quality last season had had 3 seasons of averageness prior to that. Alonso leaving IS down to Rafa imo, from last summers Barry bollocks.

No one bar Man city are buying big. Its game on. Its ours for the taking.

Would not surprise me if if the mancs make a couple major signings in the last week of the transfer window. For now they will just fool us into thinking their buisness is over.

Lads I'm sorry to burst the bubble of doom & gloom on here but Xabi only left last week. The whole re-financing thing happened 3 weeks ago. Therefore I believe that there is not a chance in hell that Rafa would let Xabi leave unless he KNEW he would get the money to spend. ALL OF IT!

This, IMO, is simply Rafa feeding the media so that the clubs we're negotiating with get the message that we're skint. I actually go along with the earlier post that says he has around 20m to spend & I firmly believe it will be spent in the next few weeks. He's biding his time.
