Everyone bar Reina and Johnson were poor tonight for me. I actually thought Lucas had started the game well and was getting more confident with his passing, but then the OG appeared to knock him for six. That was a terrible tackle from Gerrard who had lost his head for a moment there.
Gutted.

Oh and zonal marking wasn't to blame for the second goal - it was the players (Carra and Torres IIRC) standing there ball watching.

Agree about Carra and Torres ball watching. But Lucas could have cleared it before it got to them but didn't bother jumping due to the earlier incident. Think maybe they expected Lucas to clear, but should have anticpated it like Curtis Davies.

We defended poorly here and that cost us the game. Most of the team played badly and Villa still needed us to **** up three times to score. They defended well and Friedel made some decent saves when we did get through. Slim margins. Everyone was cock-a-hoop last week. Have we suddenly changed from being fantastic to utter ****e?
No-one likes a ****e performance and we've a right to point it out but to say we have lost everything after three games is crazy.

You don't have to be fantastic to tonk Stoke. And this was a poor Villa side who have also started pretty badly. We haven't lost everything, we've just got virtually no chance of winning the league, not that we had much to start with.

If Alonso had been there instead of Lucas, Gerrard would never had done that tackle - Sack Parry!

If Houllier hadn't ****ed Friedel off, he wouldn't had made those saves - Sack Parry!

To me that tackle is why Gerrard should not play alongside Mascha. We need him for his attacking ability although he didn't show much tonight.

The really frustrating thing was how predicatable we were when chasing the game. There was absolutely no passion or imagination, it was very strictly by the book, even when the gameplan had gone way out of the window. Riera should have been on and we should have been bombarding their box with crosses, as it's obvious we lacked the flair and craft to break through.

We had plenty of chances. Kuyt and Torres should both have scored with headers when it was easier to miss. We should have had a penalty, Gerrard had about ten million shots on which a normal night one would have gone in. Friedel had a great game. It was one of those nights. But as I said, if you want to win the title you can't have nights like that.

My Villa supporting mate always says to me that you know what it's like to be down when season after season you know you are going to do nothing after the first couple of games. He's a miserable ****er and I refuse to go down that road in August.

Everyone of our rivals will have games like that at home this season, it's inevitable. Our problem is we started poorly at Spurs and are already playing catch up. Far too early to push the panic button but a good win at Bolton and less of the moaning and individual errors is a must.
