Ok, I'm out. There are too many contradictions and too little civility to make this worth my while.

No offence (as in essence I do agree with you) but when going to the extreme of calling people thick cunts it helps if you check over what you're typing

        which = witch surely?

Lol I told you I was not trying to offend you and that my post was not about you, but I do find it hilarious that you bang on about civility and then go on to call people pussies who cant defend themselves ... classy

Last season I had no complaints when we looked set to sell Xabi. IMO he had been poor and I thought that we needed a different approach to games. At the time I couldn't see how a midfield of Xabi and Mascherano could work as I thought it was too static and lacking in movement. I wasn't totally sold on Barry either for that matter, but he had impressed me for England and Villa and I thought he would do well at Anfield.

When Xabi stayed and we didn't sign Barry I was not personally gutted, just a bit gutted that our manager had not been backed in his decisions, especially when it all came out in the wash that Barry had been his top transfer target.

Then the season started and Alonso started to impress. He started to move the ball quicker and my biggest problem with his play was eradicated, he was no longer caught in possession of the ball in dangerous areas. His quickened pace suprised the opposition too, as is witnessed in the number of red cards the opposition got.

I wouldn't say that Alonso started the season like a house on fire, but the fans backed him fully and showed their delight at him staying by throwing accolades his way and supporting him to the max even when he had quiet games. He grew as the season went on and was a vital component in the team that pushed Man Utd all the way. He was a professional to the last. And a top one at that.

Now someone on this very site has a quote in their signature that goes on about how a man who can't change his opinion is a fool, or something like that anyway. Well Rafa changed his opinion on Xabi. He was also a professional and lest we not forget that at times last year it was Xabi who was picked ahead of Mascherano, clear evidence that he himself did not hold grudges towards Xabi.

When the season ended Rafa it seems wanted Xabi to stay. But he didn't want to and the rest is history. We all move on.

Now it is clear from what Xabi said that Rafas attempts to sell him was the final straw as far as he was concerned. It seems he was pissed at the way he was treated after missing the Inter game by Rafa, but he got over that, as did Rafa. But after being hawked to Juventus there was no way back.

But why? Why could Alonso not change his mind. Was it personal pride, was it vanity? I thought Alonso to be more intelligent than that. I think it is clear that Rafas actions were not the only reason that Alonso went. I think a lot also had to do with the offer Madrid presented him with, but that's only my personal opinion.

Sometime in October we are going to see Aquilani take to the field and we are going to find out whether Rafas grand plan of last season is worth a damn. He wanted a mobile forward thinking midfielder. Well now he's got one, one more so than Barry or Alonso.

I think then we will find out how right or wrong Rafa was in his attempts to sell Alonso last summer. And if he's a success I'm damn sure everyone will forget about Alonso.

I don't remember Keegan leaving because I wasn't born. And I'll not compare Aquilani to the greatest player in our history. But the sentiment stands. No player is irreplaceable.

I should add that I don't remember anyone in all the time Alonso has been here saying how vital he is to our continued success, and i include the media in that. When Gerrard or Torres were out it was all about how much we'd struggle, with Alonso it was hardly mentioned. So I am personally quite confident he will be replaced.

All depends on this new system working I guess.
He might have had other reasons, we dont really know at the moment. But the thing about changing your mind can be harder for some than others, mainly depending on their situation.

I mean if my boss had basically tried to fire me last summer (know it works a bit different for us regular workser), and then only keept me on because he couldn't find a replacement, I wouldn't stay in that job for a long time. Your boss has shown lack of confidence in the work you do, and who's to say you won't get shipped out anytime soon?

For me thats the essence of it, Alonso did what he felt necessary in his situation, where the atmoshpere between the boss and himself where not the best.

Rafa made a mistake in this case, and right now we are suffering a bit for it. We will probably soon get used to play without him.

Possibly to justify your opening comment?

if you had been say ill, and for the last 2 years of your job you had not being doing very good and lets say you were employee of the month the first few months you were there ( not saying you work at mcdonalds) so your boss trys to get rid of you. But then this last year you stat working really hard and doing a fantastic job, you then tell your boss you want to leave, but he then tells you how great you are and he really wants you to stay, would you still leave?

What part about this saga do people not understand? The summer Rafa tried to sell Alonso we had (imo) Gerrard, Torres, Reina, Alonso, Mascher as full on saleable assets who anyteam in the world would want (again imo).
Out of those players Rafa deemed Alonso expendible so he was 'sacrificed' with the idea being we could bring in a replacement (Barry) and have some spare cash for further transfer dealings because of our limited funds.
Now Alonso who everyone is crying over and feeling sorry for didn't attract a single bid until Juve came in and offered approx £15 m (from memory, might have been Euros) this followed 2 seasons where Alonso was average and very below par - if people want to use the injuries as an excuse then fine but his performances were what they were.

It's pure economics, Rafa had an underperforming asset who he felt we could upgrade and make a profit, but no 12 mths ago no-one wanted him except Juve, no-one else put a bid in so that tells you what world football thought of his last 2 seasons.

Now last year Xabi was immense, absolutely first class all the way through and 100% credit to him for that but that was 1 whole consistent season out of the 5 at the club, he wanted to leave back in May but didn't grow a set of balls until August, Rafa held out for the best possible price Madrid did what they do and Xabi left.
Let's not buy this 'blame Rafa' bollocks it is clear that if Xabi wanted to still be here he would be, Rafa played him all last season, Xabi played brilliantly Xabi has now moved on because he wanted to play for Madrid, wanted to move back to Spain (for family and financial reasons - lets not forget his whinging about the pound/euro and tax etc..) and most importantly he wanted to leave Liverpool.
