If Darby and Kelly were kids from Norway and Hungary for example, do you think they'd have still been picked for this squad? Over the full international, Degen? I'm not sure.

Maybe it's because Kelly is primarily a CB who can also play at full-back - left or right - but is not therefore included as a specialist RB to cover that position, but is included because he can play anywhere across the back four

Still dont see a positional need to include him, unless he's there to be a 3rd RB option.

RB - Johnson and Darby (Kelly)
LB - Aurelio, Insua and Dossena.
CB - Carragher, Skrtel, Agger and Kyrgiakos.

Looks very much like Rafa wants 3 RB options, 3 LB options and 4 CBs.

Other than nationality quota, i dont think there's any obvious reason why he'd be in ahead of Degen. He can play across the back four, but we're well covered at LB and CB even without him.
