Sorry to sound a bit daft but can someone explain how the zonal marking system actually works?

In the context of set plays it means, I believe (I'm open to being corrected here), that each player is assigned an area in front of our goal and it is their job to attack the ball as it enters that area. The player concentrates on the ball and his position and does not move in response to the movements of opposition players.

(In play zonal marking refers to a system where defenders take position from one another meaning that the shape of the team remains unaltered - i.e. aims to press as a unit as opposed to pressurizing individuals one on one - see here)
