    Country v Club

Probably quite a hot topic at the minute....... but i was just thinking about this.

I'm 35 years old from Ireland - i've supported Liverpool since i was old enough to look at a TV - my first memories of a football gane was Alan Kennedy scoring in Paris in 81 and running towards the Liverpool supporters - from then i was hooked, and i'm glad to say, remain so now and for always.

    Red through and through.

In my life i've seen Ray Houghton score against England and Italy in big tournaments - what does it mean to me?? diddly squatt.

If he scored with a Liver Bird on his chest? i was ecstatic.

if Ireland are playing in rugby, i'm as patriotic as the next proud Irishman - but why do i not give a F*ck about international football? The truth is......i don't know!!

Obviously, mosty of you who use this forum are English...........was just wondering, do you cheer for the likes of stevie g as much in the England Shirt? whats the general opinion??

(before i get asked - i'm in L4 at least 6 times a season - viva Easyjet !! - have very nearly being divorced over my love of L4!!)

    Serious question - i'm intrigued !!

I was born and bred in Liverpool (Kenny actually, Odsey st.) I was brought up a devout Red like my brothers and sister by our dad. I joined the army at 17 and served 22 years around the world so I am also a proud Englishman, I want Independence for Scotland and Wales, but stay pals with Northern Ireland.

So Im a Liverpool lad who loves England.

I view International Football as a pain in the arse.

I supported Liverpool for as long as I can remember, in my early years I supported England too up until about the World Cup in 1998, since then I've never been bothered about England. I realised how many Liverpool players get injured on England duty and it seems to be more than anyone else (although maybe that's a perspective thing). I hate the way such injuries etc affect Liverpool, I can't support a team with so many players I can't stand. I'm sick of the press bigging up England with the "This is our World Cup/Euro Championship" and all the fans that buy into it. Also a large proportion of the England fans also wind me up, half of them don't seem to understand football.

It's got to the stage now where I'm actually glad when they go out of tournaments, because you can watch games without the constant England nonsense from the commentators and pundits. In fact I enjoyed the last European Championships more than any there have been for a while because England didn't qualify; the commentators and pundits had to talk about what was happening there, rather than having England updates.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Used to watch all the England games when I was younger but I dunno, I just dislike international football for some reason (probably because our players always pick up injuries ).

I'd like to be an England fan and get excited about their matches, but I can't boo and dislike Ferdinand, Cole, Rooney etc week in, week out and then cheer them on for England... dunno, it's strange.

I do always check international round-ups to see how the Liverpool lads have done though

I used to love watching England play...but the Steve McClaren era dulled my enthusiasm down to a "i'll watch it if there's nowt else on" state of mind...however, under Capello i am slowly regaining an interest, altho nowhere near as much as i had when El Tel was in charge all them years ago.

I'm English and I support England in every game they play but not as passionately as Liverpool football club.

I think the main problem with this club v country row is quite simply that the FA have never and will never (on account they are chicken ****s) clamp down on the clubs for pulling players out of midweek internationals with sudden new 'injuries' only for them to be perfectly fit for the Saturday game. If they clamped down on this by utilising the rule of stopping players playing for their club at the weekend you would probably see less players suddenly pulling out of the midweek internationals.

It's like the diving row. If the yellow bellied referees actually did their job and kept booking and ultimately sending off Dogbreath he would stop but they don't so he doesn't!

The other problem with club v country comes from pointless friendlies, the Australia v Holland game sticks out like a sore thumb here. Friendlies like this in the middle of a season should quite simply not be allowed. They should only be allowed at the end of a season. At the end of the day they are only likely to happen once a year so why not let it happen when there isn't a competitive game coming up the following weekend.

It's just a pain in the arse that gets in the way of the real football.

Not to mention on the international stage we're a bunch of bottling no marks who lead us to constant disappointment, more interested in glamour and glory than paying tribute to the shirt.

I hate England. Absolutely hate 'em.

Unless we're in the summer with no EPL on and we're in WC or EC time, then I tend to get carried away with the fever with the worst of 'em. And I just don't understand it :/

International football is rubbish, dull and the standard is about the same level as the Coca-Cola Football League Championship.

The world cup is the most over-rated sports event ever, I'm not sure why we ****ing bother. As someone said, it's a pain in the arse.
