Andrea Dossena to Napoli - confirmed

According to agent, Federico Pastorello, Liverpool defender Andrea Dossena hopes to return to Italy after having a tough time breaking into Rafa Benitez's starting lineup.

"Napoli is following Dossena? I can only say that nothing has changed since the transfer window closed," he told Radio Kiss Kiss.

"I haven't had any contact with [Napoli sporting director Riccardo] Bigon, but it is clear the player would like to return to Italy, because at Liverpool he is playing very little and he wants to be on a plane [for the World Cup] to South Africa.

"I hope after his injury he will be on the field in the Carling Cup. Andrea will do his utmost to regain a starting spot for Liverpool."

The former Udinese player has only made two appearances for the Reds this season.

Liverpool defender Andrea Dossena is hoping to fight his way back into Rafa Benitez's side according to his agent.

Federico Pastorello claims the left-back wants to further his international career with Italy and hopes more involvement at Anfield could enhance his chances.

Dossena has been forced to watch recent Liverpool matches from the stands after suffering a groin injury in the Carling Cup win over Leeds last month but the Italian is now itching to make his return.

The 28-year-old was linked with a move back to Serie A this summer but his agent insists he is still keen to make a name for himself in the Premier League.

"Things have not changed too much since the end of the summer transfer window," Pastorello told Radio Goal.

"Andrea is not playing a lot. First he was blocked because of a technical choice and then by an injury.

"It is now important for him to be playing and he hopes to achieve big things and be involved with the national team."

The full-back only moved to Anfield from Udinese in 2008, but has so far struggled to make an impact in England.

I think it is clear that Andre would rather stay and force his way into our team, but if his chances are going to be limited he would rather move back to Italy so he could fight his way back into the Italian set up.

I personally can't see him ever being up to it at left back, whilst we have enough players who can play LW. So with that in mind I'd let him go.

He really needs a top performance against Arsenal tonight if he is ever going to make it at Anfield.

An observation I have made is that Glenn Johnson and Dossena seem to get set up and done by players in almost the same way. I wonder if there is some style of defending that they have been taught or just a common problem that more attacking natured players have when faced with wingers when played at fullback. I seem to remember Ashley Cole having teh same problem but he ironed it out pretty quickly.

Unlike Johnson or Cole I don't think Dossena has the athleticism to work as as an attacking fullback in the PL. The only way to prove that wrong would be to give him a run of games and I can't see him getting it. Aurelio for one notably improves game on game when he comes into the team and it could be true of Dossena but the longer things go on without Rafa trusting him the more I suspect that his weaknesses are too great for him to succeed with us.

I don't really think he's been that bad and gets forward well on occasions. My biggest criticism is that he's always looked a stone or so overweight. He simply doesn't look up to the pace of our league.

                Dossena linked with Napoli switch

                Sky Sports, 3rd November 2009

Andrea Dossena's agent has admitted the Liverpool defender has attracted interest from Italian club Napoli.

The Reds defender has only made one substitute appearance in the Premier League so far this season and is finding it difficult to prove his worth to manager Rafa Benitez.

With Napoli looking to bolster their defence during the January transfer window, Dossena's agent Roberto La Florio thinks the left-back may want to move to ensure a place in the Italy squad for next year's World Cup.

"It is clear that in January Napoli will sign new players, especially in the role of Dossena," said La Florio.

"We'll see in January if there are opportunities to return to Italy and play - we are interested because Dossena wants to go to the World Cup.

"Napoli is the Italian team that has pushed most for Dossena and according to me it would be the perfect solution for him."

The 28-year-old became the first Italian player to play for Liverpool when he signed at Anfield for £7million in July last year.

Dossena is currently recovering from a muscle injury but may make the bench for the Reds' UEFA Champions League trip to Lyon on Wednesday.

Don't mind Marky mate. He has been on an anti-Insua crusade for the past few weeks.

His relationship with Insua is beginning to approach charliemansonssquint/kuyt levels.

He hasn't done anything apart from that goal against the mancs..

So how much are we expecting to get for him then?

Liverpool's £7million flop Andrea Dossena is looking to leave Anfield in January - and claims Napoli, Juventus and AC Milan are chasing him.

The Italian full-back has only made two appearances for Liverpool so far this season against Bolton in the Premier League and Leeds in the Carling Cup, despite moving for a hefty £7million in July last year.

Dossena is worried that being frozen out by Rafa Benitez will severely harm his chances of going to next year's World Cup with Italy, and admits he would like to return to his homeland.

"I know that three big Serie A clubs - Napoli, Juventus and Milan - are looking at me," he said in the News of the World.

"In August they just made other choices. I was very close to going to Juventus in the summer but they signed Fabio Grosso.

"I am now worried I will miss the World Cup."

Dossena became the first ever Italian player to sign for Liverpool last year, but has found first-team chances hard to come by this term.

However, the left-sided player insists that he has not fallen out with manager Benitez, and is just disappointed with his performances since his arrival on Merseyside.

"I'm not disappointed with the treatment I've had," he added. "I know how things work and I've always behaved correctly. Benitez chooses the line-up, and I'm paid to respect his choices.

"In truth I am a little bit unhappy with my performances. They have not seen the 'real' Dossena at Anfield."
