...........Down
99 points is the most points we can finish the season with now, if we won every game until the end. I think most of us understand that to win the league a points total of around 90 points is required, meaning we can maybe only drop 9 more points.
Must say that I am really down today thinking of this, is there anyone on this site that can raise my spirits and provide any hope to me that we can once again mount a title challenge?
No doubt Rafa and other people on here will base their main argument on the fact that a lower points total will win the league this year, as the competition with in the league has improved. Well the same argument was put forward last year, and we all know how wrong that turned out to be.
IMO, for us to genuinely challenge for the title, we now have to hit an incredible run of form, but what is the chance of that happening? To expect a team to go from average to great in the space of a couple of weeks is seriously stretching the realms of possibility.
If someone was to turn round to me and say that our injury problems were over, and that our core players would now stay injury free I would give us a small chance. But in all honestly that is not probably going to happen.
Depressing stuff, but throughout the rest of the season we will once again need to rely on our second string, and they are simply not good enough. We can point the blame in many a different direction.
But my biggest problem with Rafa is the standard of strikers at the club. We have three first team strikers and that is enough. Torres as first choice and N'Gog as third choice is also good enough, perfect in fact. It's what is between them that is the problem. Voronin or whoever else is simply not good enough. Everyone in football knows that forwards are the most important players in the game, and that is the area where our club is most lacking.
Fatal mistake.
