    99 Points and counting.........

    ...........Down

99 points is the most points we can finish the season with now, if we won every game until the end. I think most of us understand that to win the league a points total of around 90 points is required, meaning we can maybe only drop 9 more points.

Must say that I am really down today thinking of this, is there anyone on this site that can raise my spirits and provide any hope to me that we can once again mount a title challenge?

No doubt Rafa and other people on here will base their main argument on the fact that a lower points total will win the league this year, as the competition with in the league has improved. Well the same argument was put forward last year, and we all know how wrong that turned out to be.

IMO, for us to genuinely challenge for the title, we now have to hit an incredible run of form, but what is the chance of that happening? To expect a team to go from average to great in the space of a couple of weeks is seriously stretching the realms of possibility.

If someone was to turn round to me and say that our injury problems were over, and that our core players would now stay injury free I would give us a small chance. But in all honestly that is not probably going to happen.

Depressing stuff, but throughout the rest of the season we will once again need to rely on our second string, and they are simply not good enough. We can point the blame in many a different direction.

But my biggest problem with Rafa is the standard of strikers at the club. We have three first team strikers and that is enough. Torres as first choice and N'Gog as third choice is also good enough, perfect in fact. It's what is between them that is the problem. Voronin or whoever else is simply not good enough. Everyone in football knows that forwards are the most important players in the game, and that is the area where our club is most lacking.

    Fatal mistake.

The winning team will get around 80 or so points this year I reckon. Nothing is over until the fat lady sings. It's still early November and we'll bounce back, we've always done that under Rafa.

Stop the pessimism now, last night was awful. Today's another day.

It wasn't just last night though was it...this was our 6th defeat in 7 games. We have a load of injuries (Gerrard rumoured to require an op) and 3 players will be missing games soon due to suspension.

Look, lets be realistic, Chelsea are not going to lose this lead, I'd stake money now that the gap will actually increase by the end of the season and we'll end up some 20 points off the top.

"If Gerrard continues to play up front, leaving this lack of creativity and intelligence in Midfield, the season WILL be over by Xmas."

I still don't think we'll finish in the top 4 this season."

            80 points! Madness!

That would get us top 4 and little else. If you were offered 80 points now would you take it? No, of course you wouldn't. Because you know 80 points would not be good enough to win the league.

Do not read into my post and think I am giving up on the league. Far from it. I'm just offering a realistic assessment on our chances. When everyone is fit we are capable of winning over 20 games between now and the end of the season, and there is always a possibility that from now on our key players will stay fit. It just looks unlikely.

In the coming weeks Man Utd play Chelsea. One of those teams will win the league this year. We can not afford to drop any more points prior to that game. If we can win every game in the build up to that match we will look much healthier. But do we have the confidence to do that?

After the Birmingham game we have Man City, Everton, Blackburn and Arsenal. Thats a difficult run of games.

What my comments should do is the same as all the other garbage in the media - motivate them to prove me wrong.

My name is not Paul Tompkins and as such it is not my job to lift the spirits of crest fallen supporters. When ever I go to a game I fully support and sing for the team, I do not say a bad word as I am there in a position to effect the mood of some of the players and change the game for the better.

If typing positive stuff on here would mean we would win the league you could be sure that I would be on here 24/7 spouting all the good news happy happy ****.

And to underline my point, I'm not saying the title is gone. What I am saying is that we will need at least 85 points to win the league, probably more. And that it will be difficult to win the league. But I would never give up on it.

It is. But the benefits that would come from winning those games would be huge. To beat City, Everton and Arsenal would do massive amounts of good for the confidence.

And with key players fit we are capable of winning everyone of those games.

We need to win all of them, let's be honest, or win the first four and at least get a draw against Arsenal

Not looking forward to those games at all now

Nah me neither, which is a first. To be honest I just wish it was all over.

Our chances of winning the league? Well, it's pretty simple maths if you ask me, no need to go over the permutations and the doom mongering.

                            Same

The City is game is absolutely massive though, as is Lyon of course. If we can beat Lyon then it'll give us a lift. I really fear for our season though if we don't win at Lyon. Out of the CL and out of the league and CC by November. Grim
