Rafa, as much as i loved him, he's ran out of ideas.. Hurts me to say it, because i've backed him up until now. But i think it showed today, when we nicked a goal, and sat back. Houllier version 2.
As much of the problem is that we play at a slow tempo, and are at our best when we're behind, we never really looked like scoring today, the goal came out of nothing, then city had the better of the game. We were at our best from the time we went 2-1 down to the end of the game, it was the same in the Birmingham game, we played our best stuff in that game after going 2-1 down, because in both games we upped the tempo. We need to start games like than and we'll blow most teams away.

The facts are zero net spend and a club going backwards.

Liverpool are being left behind, Rafa has made mistakes but the problem isnt with the manager.

Well Alonso cost £10m and Arbeloa £4m, we sold them for £35m, so Rafa spent had a net spend of £21m on those two.

The manager's job is to get the best out of the players he's got. That has not happened.

            Huh?

Rafa sold them at a profit and you're translating it into a net SPEND?

I'm not sure what your point is.

Yes we sold Alonso and Arbeloa for a profit, but that has nothing to do with this summers budget.

Actually if you consider the net transfers of Alonso and Arbeloa our net spend on them was -£21m (because we made a profit)

Fact is the two clowns are holding us back, I would say it is almost impossible for Rafa and the team to compete as it is today. Hopefully the extra income from sponsors etc (with which the clowns have done a good job (Purslow?)), will give us more to spend in the future. It is essential if we want to keep up with Chelsea, City, Scum and Arsenal.

Fine, let's go with the net spend of zero thing, ignoring new contracts etc. We shouldn't be considerably worse than last season. Out squad is full of mediocre players, and not just cheap players. For the money spent on babel, riera, pennant, kuyt we should have at least one player who can offer decent width In midfield but we have nobody. This is not acceptable.

with the money we have you can have one torres or more players who arent as good.

so you buy a torres. he gets injured and you get slated cause the back up isnt good enough.

so lets not buy a torres but a kuyt, riera, babel etc. and then get slated cause they arent world class.

we cant have it both ways.

look at the injury list. thats why we are where we are. plus the fact that we havent really spent money this year.

No we shouldn't be considerably worse off than last season, but we've had alot of injuries, and some poor perfomances and bad luck whilst last season we over performed, also other teams have improved.

Our true level for me lies somewhere between what we're showing now and what we did last season.

The money spent on Babel Riera and Kuyt could have been used on one better player, but then our squad would have been weaker, as in all likelihood would our team (as arguably 2 of those will be in our first 11 and replaced by only one)

What a pile of bollocks my friend!!!!!!!!!!.............If you wanted a fish supper and was given a pork pie would you give it 100% to enjoy eating the little fella? or would you eat the ****er just because you was hungry and not make a big stink about it to the wife/partner?................

I know we get frustrated with the current situation but to fair to Rafa he hasn't had the full backing he has wanted during the last window so the reason for this thread is justified but we must sack pellagrino who the person for our defensive blunders , a free header in the center of the penalty box from a corner is piss poor IMO even though it was a cracking header but under no pressure all the same.

Ps did you notice how i quckly turned this into a post match thread

My point was that it is possible to ge significantly more effective players than babel and riera for te beat part of 10million quid. Yes, we can't spend like the mancs and chavs, but rafa has paid over the odds for average wide men. Not slating rafa, he's made some good buys on a budget, but he probably couldn't get proper width to the tream with a blank cheque book.
