Rafa has spent less than he's paid out in transfer fees this year. Considering we were accustomed to having around £15m per year to spend before G&H came in and we expected slow progress for it, I don't think people are in the wrong for pointing to recent underinvestment in the squad being one of the reasons for our current situation.

That said, I think people are being silly to think it's the only reason as well; after all we do still have a very capable squad. Even before injuries made life seriously tough for us we were struggling to adapt to our slightly different playing style and Rafa does have to take responsibility for that. But ****, he's not perfect, after an impressive domestic campaign I think he's entitled to have a bad patch and for us to be understanding about the factors beyond his control that have turned that into something much worse.
I agree completely, but I think this net spend argument is almost always bent to support Rafa, but his blind faith club always bend the figures to support their case. £26m profit is still £40m spent purchasing 2 players whichever way you look at it. Saying Rafa has spent less than he's spent out is factually correct, but it doesn't mean that the profit he's spent is a figure that should be ignored. Nobody is saying we have the resources of Chelsea or Manu, but to claim we spend **** all is just plain daft.

Net spend is the bottom line. If you sell a player for £30m and you buy another player for £30m you still only have one £30m player. Your squad has the same value it had before, it doesn't have a value of £30m more than before the deals.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Exactly, therefore he has buying 2 players for £14m and selling them for £34m and buying their replacements for £40m means he's had an extra £26m to spend on the same two players.

He's turned in one £10m player for a £20m player and one £4m player for another £20m so how is he worse off????

Am I to understand you think gross expenditure is the best way to judge a managers record?

I have always argued this. Net spend is something the accounts can worry about.

If you have spent £200m... its £200m. Sales dont come into it.

When Alonso was sold he wasn't a £10m player he was a £30m player, he was sold and replaced by £30m worth of players. Rafa hasn't been given an extra £20m at all. The value of a player is only really determined at points where a transfer occurs. Yes he made a £20m profit on Alonso but in the summer we had a net spend of zero.

When he was sold, alonso was probably a 17m player. Real went crazy paying 30m. Having sold him for 30, we should have been able to improve our first team on last season. We possibly have but won't know until Aquilani is fit. Whether we should have signed an injured player is another matter.
