    Debrecen Build Up

First a word from Mr Winter:

henrywinter Talk about walking on with hope in your hearts....loads of Liverpool fans noisily boarding planes to Budapest - and this is at Luton airport

I won't bother trying to choose a team as I have no idea who is fit Really hope Johnson is back though. And got a feeling we'll finally see Aquilani get some proper game time, although not sure he'll start.

Agree on Aquilani, sneaky suspicion he may start, or will at least be given 30 minutes or so.

Torres is out.....Ryan Babel (twisted ankle) and Daniel Agger (five stitches is hopeful of the treatment room clearing ahead of the midweek clash against Debrecen in Hungary.

He said: "We have to see how Babel and Agger progress for the next game on Tuesday but the positives are that Benayoun played, Riera was available on the bench and Fabio Aurelio came on and played - that's very good news.

"Hopefully we'll have Johnson back for Tuesday."

Liverpool facing injury crisis for crucial Champions League clash

Published 23:00 22/11/09 By David Maddock

Liverpool have yet more injury worries as they go in search of a Champions' League miracle this week.

They fly to Hungary today looking for results to go their way to give them a chance of remaining in the competition.

But they will do it without striker Fernando Torres, who will not travel to face Debrecen, despite training for the best part of a week.

And there are major doubts about Glen Johnson, who was due to face Manchester City on Saturday, but pulled out at the last minute after feeling a twinge in the hours leading up to the game.

And with Daniel Agger and Ryan Babel limping out of the contest early, both are unlikely to be available for the European tie that will be pivotal to Liverpool's season.

Worse could follow though. Jamie Carragher was limping badly at the end, and he will undergo fitness tests this morning to decide if he will travel to Hungary.

And both Steven Gerrard and Javier Mascherano looked uncomfortable as they left Anfield, to suggest that they too could be carrying knocks after the intense battle against City.

It leaves Benitez with another headache, but he admitted that his first concern is to resolve the defensive problems that continue to undermine his side, and in particular their failure to master the zonal marking system that has been so successful in recent seasons.

"When you're using a zonal system you have to attack the ball and if there's a player near you, you have to challenge," he said.

"It is clear you have to attack the space or the player, it doesn't mean you have to stand like a post.

"I think the majority of players believe in it, but although this year has been bad, it is still early in the season. We will see how things are at the end.

"We were improving at set pieces, but it's something we have to keep looking at. We have had too many problems with defenders from the first game of the season."

Why do we seem to pick up more injuries after every game?

Before the city game we were supposed to have everyone fit except Torres, then Johnson dropped out, In the game Agger and Babel got injured and now there are doubts over Carragher, Gerrard and Mascherano!
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Probably because the players haven't recovered from their injuries in the first place.

This thread should be titled 'the Debrecan v Liverpool + Fiorentina v Lyon thread'.

Possibly, but not really the case in terms of Babel, Agger (not his back this time) and a few of the others. Mainly it's just down to bad luck, plain and simple.

I can see tha being the case with Johnson and Gerrard, but Babel, Mascherano and Carragher weren't injured before saturday's game

I'm not sure that is completely true. Players always seem to be more liable to pick up other injuries if they are coming back from any injury. I guess they just put unusual stresses on their bodies trying to compensate and or are simply less fit having trained less and hence are more likely to have to go beyond sensible tiredness levels. Added to the fact that with a a team carrying so many people who are less than fully fit everyone who is fit has to do a bit more putting them under additional strain.

So Agger picked up that head injury because he had a bad back?

It's not true about all of them obviously but for example with Gerrard and most of the injuries we have had this season I think it is a factor. Some things are bad luck but most of the reason why a large set of injuries tends to snowball is that people are rushed back.I think it is probably one of the biggest reasons why after every game we have half the team worrying about niggles.
