Let's look on the positive side of things

Ok so this is and has been a very tough season for us all and we are only at the start of December. In a year many of us, me included hoped we would positioned to be the title favorites we have gone one step forwards 3 steps back....again ....again

There is no getting away from a couple of issues namely we have been savaged my injuries too important players and our squad it would seem is just not as good enough, presently.

But lets take a short break from all the doom and gloom and look at some positives. We have kept 3 clean sheets on the trot. We seemed to have calmed down defending set pieces, gone is the obvious edginess defending set pieces the expression of nervousness and inevitability which use to be painted on Carra's face has been replaced with that more familiar determination and confidence. Rafa has obviously mixed it up and we are defending set pieces differently, noticeably not putting someone on the line, which i think is an excellent idea.

We are undefeated in 6 now. Whilst the results have not been great we are slowly, begrudgingly moving in the right direction. There is no getting away from out current situation, with a combination of a new back four, a new system and horrific injury woes the team has lacked stability. Our players have been frustrated and heads have dropped, the customary slaughter onslaught from the tabloids has not helped but alas coming out of this weekend we have gained on the lg leaders and our squad is nearing coming back to full strength, just as the 3 main title contenders squads are due to be weakened.

United have a defender crisis brewing, Arsenal are without RVP which makes a huge difference to that team and Chelsea have the African cup to contend with. We obviously need to pick up the pace, but the there has been signs of improvement. Stevie looks to be returning to full fitness and is starting to play some nice football again. Carra has seemed to settled again. Benny is fit again, Reira is back, Torres may be on his way back, Aquailani may be about to start is first game, Masher is coming back to his best and Ngog has shown some real maturity and looks like he will make it into the senior team, not to mention Agger is back and Insua has been very solid.

Our next 3 games are all at home against teams that like to play open attacking football, Florentina, Arsenal and Wigan. I personally think its set up to really be the confidence shot we need to get things moving again and I am predicting 3 wins on the trot from these fixtures. Florentina need a win and the pressure is off us. The least our lads can do is put on a show for the fans who have traveled around europe with them this season. I have a feeling this could be a battering.

Then we have Arsenal who have a tough away trip to Olympiakos who need the win. Arsenal coming off back to back defeats to ManU and Chelsea need a result if they are going to keep in it and hopefully we can be at full strength for that game. Another Win in the same week against a top side with a squad growing in strength and perhaps we can start to build some momentum going into Chrimbo.

We have Pompey and Wolves after that before the last game of the year against Villa. By time we meet its very possible we have put 5 wins together on the trot and thats exactly what we need to do.

So lets all get behind the team Wednesday night and let it be the start of a 5 game winning streak leading into that game with Villa.

      Nice positive thread Nicey

Now if only I can take that on board and be optimistic

Must be optimistic, must be optimistic, must be optimistic... (if I say it enough times perhaps I will actually start to be optimistic - I will try).

Good post, I think that at the moment we have more positives than negatives. I think it was Johnson who said in last week that we have to build from the back and I agree, so the number one priority for me is to sort out the defence which we have IMO so far. Admittedly we still have to play good offensive teams so we should keep a strong settled side against Fiorentina with the addition of Aquilani.

We need to keep the ball and move it around better and hopefully that's the next step and I reckon Aquilani will be of some help there so the Fiorentina game should be interesting.

Then there are the players' fitness, some players have been playing recently who have been unfit or injured, no matter what anyone says, IMO it's a mitigating factor. Injuries, the owners, bad luck, bad decisions and poor form have played their part in how things are panning out, Rafa and the team will hopefully learn something on the way and it IMO it would be madness getting rid of Rafa, let's see how the team fares when we shake this rut off.

Good post Nicey and you make alot of valid points. With a fully fit and firing squad we SHOULD go on a run and surely we're too good a team to continue this ****ty form.

In saying that we're in dire straits at the minute. Even after a big win(manc game, everton game) we can't seem to take any confidence and belief into the next one and go on a bit if winning streak which is worrying in the extreme.

Furthermore we've got players last season that we could rely on to produce consistently good performances - Gerrard, Kuyt and Carragher to name but three but they're struggling this season(albeit Gerrard has had injury problems).

Sad times on Merseyside. I don't really know what to think any more.

We are getting better, not conceding goals and building confidence back. We should remove any thoughts of winning the league out of our heads, getting back to 3rd is very achievable and I still think we're a better team than Arsenal, Spurs and Aston Villa.

We're building from the back again. What has cost us this season is conceding goals. Our defence has been atrocious, especially our defending as a team.

Fair enough Pete but we can't keep waiting and hoping for the team to start performing. It has to happen and quickly otherwise we'll be really struggling.

At the same time you can't expect Rafa to solve all our problems with a magic wand is it? The players have also got the responsibility to make things happen on the pitch and they're highly paid for that.

Rafa can only suggest a methodology to improve things and ask the players to implement that on the pitch. It seems our defence is being patched up at the moment, and we're playing with a settled back 4 which greatly helps. To me this proves that Rafa still has it, results are showing.

Next stage is to win games and score goals. As soon as the balance of the team is right I'm sure we'll get back to our best.

Still, I can't be bothered with football too much at the moment as it's too depressing.

The encouraging thing for me is that we are starting to keep clean sheets again (even if the w/e's draw with Blackburn cost me £300!)
Personally the combination of a new more attacking system with the full backs pushing further forward and the horrendus injury situation caused us all our problems, you can't bed in a new system if the personel are changing game in game out.

We have had our worst run in recent history and are still within touching distance of the top 4, put a decent spell of wins together and we'll be fine

Spot on mate Look its not been Ideal but we still have time and goals to play for, You take Lampard, Drogba, Cole, Essein out of Chelsea or simular players out of Arsenal or ManU and see how they would fair. Its getting better . slowly but it is definitely getting better
