Did very well with Ireland too until the rats after the WC 2002 exit started singing "There's only one Keano" or whatever when they played their next competitive game in Ireland - ungrateful scumbags!
An Irish fan here and whilst i don't sing Keano, i wasn't upseet to see the back of McCarthy. Complete lack of ambition, Roy Keane played a far bigger role in Ireland qualifying than McC, set the tone when p*ssed off that Ireland only drew in Holland when 2 up, whereas McC was thrilled with the point.

McCarthy's first words upon qualifying were 'great now i can go and enjoy the wc', it wasn't his job to enjoy it, it was to try and win it! He didn't even realise Ireland were playing against 10 men for Spain for f8cks sake, so to say we were ungrateful scumbags is completely out of order.

As is to say Keane had the right attitude. I didn't say anyone who didn't like McCarthy was a scumbag, just those who belted out the Keano bile. Anyway, I don't want to drag up the past - why waste time? To cut a long story short, I'm right

That is the biggest crock of s**t, what he meant was we had qualified and he didn't have to spend the Summer watching other teams in the WC while he was at home.

Not taking the piss like but Ireland had no chance whatsoever to win it.

The thing is there is no point going purely to make up numbers - just look at Greece in 2004.

That said I'm not sure McCarthy's comments indicate anything other than that he would go out to do as well as he could. It's a bit like last season before the Fulham - Mancs game when everyone was slating Roy Hodgson for some remarks he made saying he was bending over for them, then they went and beat them. People read into managers pronouncements pretty much whatever they want to hear.
