Gerrard's play dropped after the first 15min, so probably really is a fitness thing. he should have been substituted at half time, and n'gog brought on instead. eh **** it, we all get the drift of what went wrong tonight, frustrating stuff, seems like the more time we have to prepare for a game the worse we play..

Nah - Whereas Rafa didn't want to pick Keane, with Aquilani he just feels that he isn't able to cope with two games a week at the moment. He'll start on Saturday against Bolton, and will play regularly for the rest of the season.Originally posted by Shanks View PostThat Aquilani signing is starting to look more and more like the Robbie Keane scenario.
The only difference being, is that Rafa bought him.
I feel quite sorry for the lad.

We desperately need a left winger and a striker, but I don't think we need a complete overhaul. Reina, Carra, Agger, Johnson, Mascher, Gerrard, Torres, and even Kuyt, Lucas and hopefully Aquilani and Maxi are good enough to form the basis of a title winning side. We just need to add one or two more quality players, make sure we keep the ones I've mentioned, and hope that they can stay fit. Agger, Johnson, Mascher, Gerrard, Torres and Aquilani have all missed huge chunks of this season, and Carra's been played out of position too often to cover for injuries too.Originally posted by cream View PostThis team has had it, peaked last season. We need some fresh impetus, some new thinking, the team needs reduilding, whether its Benitez who does it or someone else but half of the team need to sold and fresh blood needs to come in.Last edited by calvoboy; 26-01-10, 11:20 PM.

Just an educated guess based on his recent selection. He's been picked regularly since he's been fit, but has never been picked for two games in a week. Rafa explained when he left him out of the team for Stoke that he didn't think he was up to two games in a week, so whether it's right or wrong, it's what he's thinking. I'd be shocked if he didn't start on Saturday.Originally posted by Shanks View PostIs that a guess?

If he was then there is something more underlying wrong. Personally I don't think he is fully fit, fit enough to play maybe but anyone else (aside from him and Torres) coming back from injury would have been introduced from the bench for their first game and maybe a game or two in the reserves to get them back to match sharpness. Personally I would have started him on the bench because I think the team compenstate by upping their game in his absence and a fully fit Gerrard takes us to another level, I feel that having an unfit Gerrard start loses both these factors from our team, and hence that's part of the reason we were so poor today.Originally posted by vonk View PostWe can only assume he was fully fit. He was just ****e, but I don't think he was our worst player by a long shot. What did Kuyt and Lucas do that was so special? The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I'd noticed that as well, but it's been 6 days since our last game, I'd have thought it could have been advantagous to play Aquilani today instead of Gerrard and give Gerrard an extra few days to recover and improve his fitness/sharpness.Originally posted by calvoboy View PostJust an educated guess based on his recent selection. Yep - I'd have played him tonight too, and left him out for Bolton if needs be (although four days should be long enough to recover surely?). Unless Rafa has decided that he'd rather play him at home than in away games? The game was crying out for him at times tonight though, especially seeing as he seems to be good at one-touch football, and that's all we were getting tonight.Originally posted by Exiled_red View PostI'd noticed that as well, but it's been 6 days since our last game, I'd have thought it could have been advantagous to play Aquilani today instead of Gerrard and give Gerrard an extra few days to recover and improve his fitness/sharpness.
