I think its a little unfair if the only words you use to describe that pass are 'slightly overhit' - Lucas had to put a lot of pace on the ball as it went right between 2 Blackburn players who could have intercepted it had it been slower. He also hit it close enough to Torres for him to have taken a touch to slow the ball if he needed to.

Unfortunately the writer of those two words has a pathological dislike of Lucas and can't bring himself to give him due praise. It was a brilliant pass and the goal simply wouldn't have happened without it. As he was in the more defensive role than Gerrard it was inevitable he wouldn't get forward too much, but he still managed to put in a good shift for 90 minutes whereas Gerrard faded badly in the second half. I would say he shaded it as man of the match from Mascherano

So basically me posting in this thread that I thought Lucas played a good pass for Torres' goal has resulted in the usual suspects finding cause to criticise him.

And therefore, by your own logic, it was played at the perfect pace to get it through the gap...if he'd hit it softer, it wouldn't have made it, the chance would have petered out and we wouldn't have scored. Perfect pass in the situation at the time. Well played Lucas.

It was a good attempt at playing a nearly-impossible ball. It was played with too much pace for Torres, but any less pace and it probably wouldnt have got through. Bearing that in mind, it was a very ambitious pass that needed to be exactly precise, and anyone would've found it hard to execute perfectly. He tried it though, and fair enough to him, because trying difficult passes is exactly what he could be doing more of. And it did lead to the goal, albeit indirectly, but without the pass, we wouldnt have scored in that situation.

Torres was too slow to react. How can you argue against Lucas' merits as he's clearly been our player of the season. Look at the MoM threads.

I dont think it was an 'impossible' pass to get right, just very very difficult, with no margin for error whatsoever. You could argue that the most sensible thing to do would've been keep the ball and play it simple, but i think that you do sometimes need to do the more difficult thing, in order to get the best reward. 9 times out of 10, it might not come off and lead to anything, but when it does, then it's happy days.
