i agree and your examples are all accurate and fair but the fact is that lucas is a fairly good player who excels at nothing. we can go on about forward movement, the odd good pass, the fact that he always finds a teamate etc but we are aiming at winning the league (next season) and qualifying for the CL and while i obviously don't think a team needs world players of the year in every position, all our competitors have creativity in CM and that is more than just isolated instances of scoring/assisting/a good run that should have got a penalty etc..

i'm not sayong lucas is **** - i'm just saying he doesn't create much or ever boss a game in anything other than a very functional way. that's fine if we had someone beside him to run things but we don't. (i actually prefer lucas to masher but this thread seems to be running on some sort of weird defend lucas at all costs thing at the moment)

Actually I think he excells at covering the defence, not as good as Mascherano, but he is a superior player going forward.

I'd go for any of the three of Lucas, Pepe and Lucas personally. Pepe as his usual self, Lucas and Insua for having improved significantly from the previous season. But yes, it's been a terribly **** season.

Don't think Lucas can held responsible for that and it is to his credit that he has continued to play well.

actually i agree with you and it's the reason i prefer him over masher. i think he covers the defence in the same unspectacular but very effective way xabi did - covers loads of ground, shuts down space etc. but that's where all similarities end.

Nah, Gerrard has been poor a lot of this season, Torres has been a bit hit and miss (with injuries not helping) Kuyt was poor for a good period of the season, Mascherano had a very slow start, Carra and Skrtel were both poor early in the season, Insua has been learning, Riera has been injured, Yossi has been hit and miss.

agree totally. so our best player this season has done nothing to help us win games, has created nothing of note - aside from blackburn - but has helped us to get more defensively solid? so he's not creative then?

he constantly does ok with the odd really good game , he is the definition of joe average.

You talk about masher, torres, benayoin, kuyt, gerrard being hit and miss ...but most of there performances are so much better rhan lucas's games.

Those who really rate Lucas seem to judge him on different criteria to rest of team
