Do We Need Carra?

It is best left untill the last minute for a contract extension for 2 reasons.
1. Keeps Carra on his toes, tells him the club is in charge and not his agent.
2. (Most impoprtant) a new contract will mean a pay rise, even only 10k per week over 2 years is 1m quid. This money would be better spent improving other areas, like the owners expense account or for extra security when they visit Anfield. Flying back and forward across the pond doesn't come cheap. There are also the 2 or 3 new stadium plans per year to pay for.Last edited by kev776; 08-03-10, 09:17 AM.Those that hid Anne Frank were breaking the law.

I think he is probably still our best defender from a purely defensive point of view. The leadership organisation thing is also hugely important.Originally posted by squaddie View PostThats not my point tbh.
Carragher would never be a problem for us if he'd be willing to sit on the bench 'now and again'........ Which he isnt.... So as soon as this starts happening he'll be wanting to move on to first team football. Very similar to the Hyppia situation and at the end of the day how could you blame him?
My only worry is there's no defender in our team that has the ability to control that back line the way he does.... Not one that i can think of anyway
I do wonder though whether Agger and/or Skrtel might improve if they had to do it for a sustained period. At the minute neither takes responsibility for things enough and perhaps removing the crutch of Carragher would push them on. The risk being that if neither stepped up we would be in a very poor position.
I also think that his versatility is a valuable asset. We need another utility defender in my view with or without him in the squad. We look even weaker in that depth regard if he were to leave any time soon."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

No we don't need him. He's been on the slide for a couple for years now and was shocking earlier this season. He's elevated that to being mostly average now.
He gives away more penalties than any other player and his distribution is truly terrible. He simply looks up and launches it vaguely into the inside-right channel. His lack of pace while he's been playing at right-back means he can't add anything to our right-sided attacks and also leaves him exposed to a pacey winger.
He was an excellent CB up to 3-4 years ago but time has clearly caught up with him and I'll be very surprised if he's a first-choice player next season

So he must have some leadership qualities about him.Well, it was massive. Even though he was only very young, he played with great maturity. There was no doubt he had a big influence on our side. What surprised us was that he would tell his teammates where to go and help them through games. That was quite special at such a young age.
Personally I do still think we need Carragher (well definitely considering the injury records of others), but part of me wonders if there might be a Thierry Henry effect if he was to go, and others wouldn't be afraid to take more responsibility. If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

We certainly need Carra for the rest of this season! After that it depends on who comes in
Across the back 4 these is no natural leader apart from Carra, every team needs someone marshalling the defence and talking without Carra we'd miss this massively.
For me Carra should be around for as long as he wants at Anfield but he may also have to except as time ticks on he isn't an automatic first choice.
