The Football Association will not be taking any action against Liverpool's Steven Gerrard following his clash with Portsmouth's Michael Brown.

Firstly, Bellend looked over his shoulder and saw Stevie G closing in on him. Bellend first move was to try and hit Stevie G by throwing his left elbow back into chest throat area. This is where the focus should be. This was the route cause of Stevie G putting up his arm to defend himself.

Secondly, the tv pundits/commentators basically hate us, they love it when we get stuffed. When we win they try to undermine the result in any way possible.

Finally, these experts can go **** themselves. All it would take is for people to start writing to the broadcasting companies to say that we dont want commentators or pundits we just want live sound from the game. This would give the broadcasting companies more profit and we wouldnt have to endure constant drivel from these tossers

It's an utterly stupid rule though.

Someone could literally stamp on someone's face and hurt him badly, but would get away with it because the ref might, in the heat of the moment, have seen it and thought it was an honest mistake.

It is a stupid rule in that respect, but it's consistent with other FA policies (such as a lack of goal line technology) in that it allows the referee to make the decisions. Allowing decisions to be changed once they are made opens a whole can of worms. If they were allowed to overturn decisions there would be dozens of cases a week from the premiership alone which someone would want reviewing, it would be a total nightmare.

As for the Gerrard - Brown incident yes Gerrard does go to hit him but Brown is far from blameless; he has no intention of getting the ball he's after blocking/taking Gerrard out, also he raises his arm into Gerrard first.

Steven Gerrard has escaped disciplinary action over for the use of his forearm against Portsmouth's Michael Brown in Liverpool's 4-1 win yesterday. The decision has incensed Manchester United and led to allegations that the Football Association has employed double standards. Had he been found guilty of violent conduct, Gerrard would have been banned from Liverpool's trip to Old Trafford on Sunday. The collision with Gerrard knocked Brown to the floor.

United's anger stems mostly from the fact that the defender Rio Ferdinand was banned for three games for swinging an arm into the face of Craig Fagan during a 4-0 win against Hull in January. That punishment was increased by one match after Ferdinand appealed. The champions will not make official comment on Gerrard's case but privately they have admitted to being surprised by the verdict and not understanding why the Liverpool captain has been let off. The ruling is also likely to go down badly among Liverpool's rivals for the fourth Champions League place.

The FA says it cannot act because the referee concerned, Stuart Attwell, has maintained that Gerrard's offence did not merit a booking or a red card.

In Ferdinand's case, the incident was missed by the referee, Steve Bennett, who said that he would have shown a red card had he seen it. Attwell has told the FA that he was satisfied with how he dealt with the incident, by awarding Portsmouth a free-kick and speaking to Gerrard.

The United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, feels that his team are punished more severely than other clubs. At Ferdinand's hearing United's legal team cited the FA's failure to charge Liverpool's Javier Mascherano over a similar incident involving the Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford at Elland Road in September.

Attwell's view that he was in control of the incident is unlikely to improve his reputation. The youngest Premier League referee by some distance, at 27, he has become known for mistakes, most notoriously the award of a "ghost goal" in a match between Watford and Reading in September 2008.

Gerrard escaped punishment from the FA last week after making a two-fingered gesture towards the referee Andre Marriner in a 1-0 defeat at Wigan. Rafael Benítez, the Liverpool manager, responded to Monday's incident by substituting his captain.

Couldn't help but notice the latest edition of Red Issue (#1 Manc fanzine for anyone who didn't know). It was on the counter in some newsagent today and the front cover has a picture of Rafa sheepishly shaking hands with Ferguson - obviously taken after one of our defeats years ago, after all it's been a while - with a quote bubble coming from Rafa saying "you won't gloat when you take our record, will you?". The big headline above the picture said "20 YEARS AND COUNTING".

Michael Brown believes Steven Gerrard "got away" with elbowing him the back of the head, but maintains there is no lingering hard feelings towards the England midfielder.

Liverpool captain Gerrard seemed to strike Brown in the 73rd minute of the Barclays Premier League clash at Anfield on Monday night, and was substituted immediately afterwards.

However, the Football Association were unable to take any retrospective disciplinary action as referee Stuart Attwell saw the incident at the time and spoke to Gerrard after awarding Portsmouth a free-kick.

Brown quipped: "It is fantastic if you can get away with it, isn't it? It is amazing.

"He has obviously caught me, but let's move on.

"I am not here to say he should be suspended, he has got away with it, and we move on.

"But if it had been me, I am sure I would have got a three-match ban, no question.

"It was not a huge deal.

"Yes, he could have got punished, but he didn't."

Brown added: "He could have got a three-match ban, but the referee says he has seen it, and there is no problem from me.

"Good luck to him, if the FA feel they do not need to punish him, then fair play."

At Wigan, Gerrard escaped punishment after appearing to flash a V-sign at referee Andre Marriner.
