Riera - Benitez never talks to Liverpool Players

Looks like Albert won't be upset if Rafa leaves

Rafa Benitez Never Talks To Liverpool Players – Albert Riera

Spaniard reveals lack of harmony at Anfield…

Liverpool winger Albert Riera has launched a stinging attack on coach Rafa Benitez, revealing the Spaniard hardly talks to his players.

"In the two years I have been here he has never managed a situation with a player by talking to him. He thinks he is the boss and everyone else is deaf. The dialogue with the players is practically zero,” Riera told Radio Marca.

The former Espanyol man has found himself out of favour at Anfield recently and revealed that he is most upset at the lack of an explanation for his complete exclusion from the side.

“When you stop playing in this manner it must be something personal,” he continued. “If I'm doing something wrong and you are my boss, and you count on me, then why not come and tell me what I need to do to play? That's what really hurts.”

"[Fernando] Torres and [Pepe] Reina encourage me. They tell me that they know that if I play, I will do well. But a week goes by and then another and another and nothing has been achieved. There shouldn't be a lack of communication either, because I speak Spanish and my English isn't bad either.

Riera also expressed his surprise at how much of a difference the departures of Alvaro Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso have made to the club.

"It's unbelievable that two players have changed things this much."

Finally, the Spanish international said he would be surprised if Benitez became the coach of Real Madrid next season, saying he didn’t think Rafa’s brand of football would go down well in the Spanish capital.

"In Madrid, they ask you to play beautifully as well as win. I see this as the difficult thing. We have never played beautiful football - effective, yes - but we haven't displayed brilliant play,” he concluded.

        Ah.

I like Riera and he was one of our best players last season.

Guess his omission from the squad and starting line up over the last few months would explain this interview. Strange how he's gone from figuring in almost every game last year, to hardly putting two games together this season (obviously he's been injured, but even when fit he's been overlooked).

I expect there'll be denials. And then a summer transfer.

I actually think this is Rafa`s biggest flaw and Iv said it before on here. You NEED to man manage your players otherwise there is no "Team" in team.

                  Almost certainly

Would be interesting to read the full interview though. My Spanish isn't good enough to navigate through the Marca site

                  Anyone?!

If what Riera says is true, then is it not something that concerns you, more than just saying 'oh well, we will get over it' ?

What if Riera's views are shared by others in the squad? What if Torres or Reina starts feeling the same way? Just **** them off too?

Another take on it from the Guardian, with other quotes included:

Albert Riera wants to leave Liverpool after falling out with Rafael Benítez

Albert Riera has indicated that he wants to leave Liverpool after revealing that his relationship with Rafael Benítez has deteriorated to the point where he thinks the manager has something against him.

In an outspoken attack on Benítez, Riera said the manager "turns a deaf ear" to his players and described Liverpool as a "sinking ship". He also questioned whether his fellow Spaniard was suited to the Real Madrid job because his style of football is not attractive enough.

Riera has played only twice for Liverpool since the end of January, making one start and one substitute's appearance in the Europa League, and the midfielder is giving serious consideration to asking for a transfer in an effort to earn a place in Spain's World Cup squad.

"When the coach doesn't say anything to you and you are in good shape with no physical problems and training well, you have no choice but to think [the fact you are not playing] is personal," Riera said. "The team's playing badly and needs changes. If I'm doing something badly and you're my boss and you trust in me, then you would tell me what I am doing wrong and what I have to do to play. [The fact that Benítez has not said anything] is what most hurts.

"Right now the only market open is the Russian one. I have offers from two clubs and, given my situation, that has made me reflect a lot ... My objective is to go to the World Cup and for that to happen I have to play."

Riera said he was not alone in having communication problems with Benítez. "He thinks he is in charge and he just turns a deaf ear to everyone else," he told Radio Marca in Spain. "The dialogue with the players is practically non-existent. There is a lack of tact."

Asked about Benítez's credentials for Madrid, where Manuel Pellegrini is not expected to be in charge next season, Riera said: "At Madrid they ask you to win and play lovely football. We are effective, sure, but we don't play brilliant football."
