I think the squad we have now is better than the squad we had when Rafa took over, we've had a bad season this year for numerous reasons, in terms of our squad development this season is just a blip the general trend has been upwards. The problem is other teams are throwing money around which has allowed them to develop their squad at a faster rate than us, hence narrowing the gap
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Well it's not my analogy. I think Tompkins used it first or borrowed it from somewhere.

To say we started with a semi and ended up with a delapidated semi is harsh in the extreme. We all know Rafa had to sell strikers to buy Torres. I'm not saying mistakes havent been made in the transfer market but show me a club that hasn't?

our squad is miles better than 2004 when he took over.

            Absolutely chalk and cheese.

The problem is the squad is better than .....but the manager has got steadily worse

I am pretty confident that wenger and ferguson could get a title challenge out of that squad now, whereis 2004 no chance.

Agree to an extent, but that 2004 team won the CL.

I don't think we are stronger now. Torres, that's the only real difference. Oh, and Reina.

Interesting list. Although I think adding in all the backroom staff he's bought should also be a factor.

                        errrrr........but you get my point.

also they are, lucky enough to have some great youth prospects breaking through now who will save them a fortune in the transfer market
There's no way they've spent anywhere near us in the last 3 seasons.

Just look at that list and think Johnson and Aquilani in the summer and thats 2 players who cost us the same as that list of 4. Then add Torres the summer before, Babel, Mascherano and thats another £60m.

Youth players are not lucky either. Sure there's an element of luck in any young player making the grade, but then perhaps Moyes gives them more chances to prove themselves and perhaps their youth academy is performing better from the scouting to the coaching?
