I just met (well a few hours ago) Maxi and his wife. I got a picture taken with him. Apparently he's 5ft 11" tall. I was literally 2/3 inches taller than him and I'm actually 5ft 11".

I think he's been good and encourages neat short passing and intelligent movement when we get playing. He's not been here long but I see him as a positive move towards a more technique based attack.

Agreed, but we are playing **** football with the odd segment of decent football. Maxi (and most of our attacking players) are just not suited to hoofs forward from our CBs.

I cannot believe that with the personnel we have we still play such a disjointed inconsistent style of football.

I think that is part of the problem but that actually the cause is essentially that when we lack confidence we drop to deep and we have no obvious route to get the ball forward. We haven't managed to get Insua and Johnson to be a convincing conveyor belt of the ball into midfield (in a way that Arbeloa I think was) and the defensive midifelders tend to be too deep (and hence easily crowded out) and too static.

We seem to lack the relationships between players that made us get the ball out and to encourage confidence and movement elsewhere. Last season both Skrtel and Agger did well in combination with Alonso bringing the ball out of defense. There seems no similar players willing to make space and willing to turn on the ball in midfield in the team at present.

The Wigan game is a good example - Lucas all too often found no quick short ball forward and passed it back. On many occasions Xabi would have held it and turned. Gerrard seemed to do the same actually with more of an emphasis on trying a daft long ball rather than a saftey first but unhelpful ball backwards. At the very start of the game we were making a few decent moves with Kuyt, Benayoun and Maxi all linking well and swapping positions. A few Wigan breaks and the team pattern went completely.

I do think that either personal growth from Lucas, Aquilani or Babel could solve a good number of our problems if they learned to play a PL appropriate game with a bit more conviction and forward intent.

I actually think at times that Lucas and Maxi link quite well, they do seem to be playing a different type of game to a lot of the others in the team though.

maxi is a decent enough player but is the type / kind of player we already have ( a yossi / kyut player )


we need someone who will play quick attacking wing play ( a malouda / valencia / nani / walcott etc... ). if maxi isnt working out in a game then a kyut or yossi player wont either.....and vice versa.

in short, not a bad squad player but no better ( and no different ) than we already had / have.

Slagging off a player who has only made a handfull of starts in a new league for a team in a bad run of form, after not playing much this season anyway makes so much sense!

I think he's technically too good for us and probably better than over half the squad, he takes up intelligent positions, is comfortable on the ball and plays wide left, right or in the hole.

More imporantly Torres ****ing loves him and he's a big mate of Mascherano. He could be the next Sean Dundee for all I care if it helps us keep those 2!

He's lacking a bit of confidence though, evident in the way he'd rather pass than shoot. Perhaps he's less selfish than I'd imagined and he does seem a good team player. The Argies and Spaniards are totally different from glory hunting Brazilians and Portuguese

This thread was a lame duck anyway but as he continues to improve and help us become a better passing side, it just looks worse and worse. Lame.

I think he's put in some decent performances, yesterday was probably the best yet. This thread was unfair to start with as he had to adapt to a new league and was initially playing in a team that was badly lacking confidence.
