I don't remember it that way. I kind of remember it as pretty much the same style but a more ground based variant of the 4 passes to get a shot on goal philosophy of Houllier. I'd really have to re-watch games to be sure though - time does strange things to your impressions of things.

Pride aside, from a financial point it makes no sense to him either. If the board want him out 100% he'll get much more than 3m...I think the fans of Liverpool are smart enough to realise he has been ****ed around and would not mind him sticking up for himself.
