Like the majority of the people here, I'm not a fan of him taking over, not because I personally dislike Woy, but more because it shows a lack of ambition by the club. I felt by making an appointment like Rijkaard, Pellegrini, Lippi or to a lesser extent Deschamps it would have atleast given a sense of optimism around the club, something that would let us know that we were on our way to potentially achieving something if they could get a squad firing even against the odds and in adversity someone who could be seen as something of an inspiration.
Unfortunately, Hodgson doesn't give you that feeling that he can catapult us right back into the top. I think the best we can hope for is finishing 4th, but probably having to settle for 5th or 6th place. It's almost realising how low we've sunk, or conceding to have fallen even lower than we have. I know a lot of people have a problem with the squad but if you look at it in a very unbiased manner it's not as bad as many seem to believe, it's the core of a pretty good team there which could do things with a bit of freshening up.
I'm sure Hodgson is very good at what he does and he'll do everything in his capacity to do a good job. The thing is, basically everyone knows football, I know, you know, the average fan on the street can tell you the basics about tactical systems and formation, the advantage and weaknesses of them, so to think that a pro that has been in the game for a frightening amount of time doesn't know that is pure ignorance. Obviously certain managers prefer certain styles, players and systems but surely Roy knows that he's in a different ballpark as manager of Liverpool compared to Fulham. Seeing that he has won leagues, even if they were in the depths of obscurity it shows that he knows how to win leagues, if he can or not is a different story, but seeing that he can compare of the gulf between Liverpool and Fulham this should ensure that despite our lack of funds he should be able to realise that an acceptable player for Fulham 9 times out of 10 isn't one for Liverpool.
And just because there is a lack of funds doesn't mean he's going to buy the same calibre of player just for the point of spending the resources available, no matter how limited. Of course, we may see him buy a ****house left back because we're in need of one for example. But this could be due to a lack of funds, it's not like the money spent on Riise, Traore, and Dossena for example guaranteed quality, because all 3 of them were below par performers. Although I'd like to think that if he does buy average or below average players it's because of the financial restrictions placed upon him not because he genuinely thinks that they are the best players available to play for Liverpool. I use Sam Allardyce as an example of that. I would say that he is a poor manager with a poor understanding of the game in many respects despite having a decent midtable club record. When you look at his move from Bolton to Newcastle, analysing his transfers just shows you how clueless he is. He had more than double of the transfer budget, but he bought the same compatible **** for double the price. The likes of Geremi, Joey Barton, Alan Smith etc, when he should have been going for players with more quality rather than his tried and tested route, which in the end was the reason for their relegation.
So if our acquisitions are poor due to financial constraints I'll have a go at the owners rather than Roy, and at this stage in the procedure I do believe that he has the competence to know what he's doing, seeing he's been in the game for the duration he has and has worked in 1 or 2 decent jobs.
I reluctantly wish him my best, as I say he is a man I've always liked but not in a million did I ever picture him as the manager of Liverpool. Here's to hoping that he proves me and a lot of other people wrong and really gets us going again against the odds, although I somehow doubt it. If he just maintains us for a year or two and acts like a bridge until we get new owners are financially strong again and leaves a solid base for a top class coach to work with and propell us to success I wouldn't be too grim. If he does a Souness for example I'd be pretty down.

How would people react if he stated that he wants to challenge for the title with positive attacking football?
Plus why are people getting worked up over a story by the Daily Mirror? Since when have they been accurate? Roy knows that the fans would not accept half rate journeymen. Was muß, das muß.

Not a Roy supporter, did not want him but now it looks like it will happen i will get behind him 100%, as someone said in a post earlier, support for the club is not conditional.
Some of ths stuff i read on this thread before shipping to the last page just makes me wonder if this is the same Liverpool club and fan base i felt so much part of for so many years. Stupid things like "i wont support him" .... (stay at home mate).... are just not the Liverpool way.
Look at what we have, two yanks who are broke and who are stripping the club of our assets, in idiot / liar / **** as a managing director who forced a world class manager out of the club because he would not follow their deceit and lies, between them they are peddling the club around the planet like a Thai whore whilst at the same time they all plan not to be here (hopefully) when the club is eventually sold to some rich investors who will give them as much money as they can get, not for the club mind but for themselves AKA Parry and Moores.
So when you think about that and the fact that any other manager of world class standing that they have approached and who have politely said "no thanks" then FFS give this bloke a chance. And before anyone jumps on the Kenny bandwagon yes i would have taken him in a heartbeat but i suggest we do not listen to all we read, save that for when the King speaks for himself.
Get in there Roy (? or whomever) and do your best for us while you are here , we cannot demand more under the circumstances.

The club has clearly shown a lack of ambition by getting Woy in. Although I'm pretty disappointed with the direction that the club appears to be heading, my full support would definitely be with Woy.
As I look to the new season, I feel that I should be lowering my expectations and I guess a mid table finish is looking very likely. With these kind of performances, I don not know who would want to purchase the club.

I just find this vitriol against Hodgson a bit unrealistic.Originally posted by Shaggy View PostI'm pretty sure Pellegrini didn't spend that money/buy those players. And, with those players he didn't choose, he guided them to 97 points, the highest total in their history. His CV is miles better than Roy's.
Having said that, I've just had my first smoke of the day
and I've mellowed towards it all a bit.
It'll be interesting to see how Roy lines us up, having gotten used to Rafa's ways and his preferred personnel etc.
Not taking into account players he may buy and sell...how do people think he'll set us up - formation and player-wise? Obviously it's all speculation but still. Interesting.

I'm not going to express my dislike for the owners by taking it out on a man who has decided to leave a club where he is loved to try to win things with Liverpool, before he has even had a chance. Turning against the manager and hoping he fails does the club no good. The owners are on the way out and people should be careful what they wish for if they want Hodgson to fail. I would never, ever want any Liverpool manager to fail. I want to win every single match, friendlies and reserve matches included, even if we were owned by Herman Goering!
Those claiming its a disappointing appointment... who did you really think we could get? Mourinho, Hiddink, Capello? - the fact they are already in big jobs not an issue then? The only realistic candidates for the job were
Hodgson, Dalglish, Pellegrini.
There were no other realistic candidates, and I challenge anyone to name one more available experienced manager.
There are question marks over all three. Hodgson has experience, but no success with a big club. Dalglish (who is my idol) - my heart would say yes but deep deep down this would have been an appointment based on sentimentality alone. He was not a success in his last few management roles and has been out of the game a long time. Put it this way, if any other club had a managerial vacancy, would Kenny be considered? The people who appoint managers are not dreamers at any club. Pellegrini would have been a decent bet but again there are doubts, the main one being the fact that La Liga is totally different story than the Premier League. Look how long it took Rafa to adapt? In terms of knowing this league Hodgson wins that hands down. The other alternative was to appoint someone young and unproven like Martinez, but I can't imagine the stick he would have got for taking the job.
So there we have it. Was Hodgson really the disastrous appointment some are saying? Worse than Milan appointing Allegri? City appointing Mark Hughes? Juve appointing Ranieri?
As for players leaving? All totally unfounded speculation until it happens. Wring your hands all you want about Gerrard, Torres et al, who may or may not stay, just like any player at any club every summer. Whats the point moaning about how Torres will leave when no-one only Torres himself knows what his intentions are. Baseless speculation at this point.
Hate the owners as we all do. But get behind the team and what's happening on the pitch. It's possible to do both.

He is also likely to speak with Steven Gerrard before the club captain returns from holiday on 18 July and may already have done so. HODGSON ON BRINK OF REDS SWITCH
By Carl Markham, Press Association Sport
Roy Hodgson is expected to be confirmed as Liverpool manager later today after the finer details of his switch from Fulham are finalised.
The 62-year-old has been in line to take over from the departed Rafael Benitez for the last couple of weeks but the negotiations have taken slightly longer than anticipated.
Hodgson is likely to be given a two-year contract with no escape clause to allow him to leave should England come calling, having been touted as a possible successor to Fabio Capello should a dismal World Cup campaign hasten the Italian's exit.
He is likely to be joined at Anfield by his trusted assistant Mike Kelly, although Sammy Lee - brought in by Benitez because of his coaching credentials and links to the club's successful past - is expected to be given a role somewhere in the new set-up.
Hodgson has been warned by former Liverpool striker John Aldridge about the task which lies ahead.
"He's got a massive job on his hands at Liverpool," said Aldridge.
"This is the most important stage in Liverpool's history since Bill Shankly took over with what's happening off the field with the owners and the lack of stability at the club."
With the sale of the club by co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett still dragging on and the futures of Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard and Javier Mascherano still uncertain, Hodgson will have plenty to keep him busy.
However, with the club' first competitive match being the Europa League third round qualifying first leg on July 29 he has little time to dwell on such issues.
Hodgson's impending appointment has received a mixed response on Merseyside, with many fans wanting a more high-profile name and plenty keen to see the return of former player and manager Kenny Dalglish, who despite being part of the selection process wanted to step back into the hot-seat after a 19-year absence.
Aldridge believes the former Inter Milan and Blackburn boss does have the necessary credentials, having guided Fulham to a runners-up place in the Europa League this season.
"His experience is fantastic with the jobs he's done in Italy and Switzerland (as coach of the national team," he told Sky Sports News.
"He might have had a bad year or two at Blackburn Rovers, but when you've been in the game as long as he has, you are allowed a few mistakes."Me, I’m either planning a holiday or I’m on one.

Lure of putting Reds back on map too great for Hodgson to turn downfrom FRONT page
It remains unclear, though, whether Capello will be allowed to continue because Hodgson will be appointed Liverpool manager, or whether Hodgson decided to commit to Anfield because Capello will be allowed to continue.
Several sources on Merseyside have intimated that the lure of rebuilding England's most decorated club was simply something that Hodgson could not turn down.
Hodgson is likely to be joined at Anfield by his trusted assistant Mike Kelly, though it is expected that Benitez's No 2, Sammy Lee, will remain at the club in some capacity.
Kenny Dalglish, too, is not thought to be considering resigning from his post at Liverpool's academy, despite his obvious frustration at not being offered a return to the managerial position he last occupied in 1991.
tasks
Hodgson will face a litany of tasks upon his arrival, not least confirming the sale of Yossi Benayoun to Chelsea and fielding an expected bid from Benitez, now at Inter Milan, for Javier Mascherano.
He must also seek talks with Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, both of whom remain undecided about their futures, before attempting to spend the £12m or so transfer fund he will be given.
Though his former charge Brede Hangeland has been widely linked for a move to Anfield, to team up with Hodgson once more, Fulham's £15m asking price prohibits any immediate move.
Hodgson is believed to be considering offering Gilberto Silva, the veteran former Arsenal man now at Panathinaikos, a return to the Premier League. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
