If the new owners don't come in a decent amount of time before the deadline we'd end up with a very weak squad in terms of numbers because we won't have been able to replace them in time, it's not the way to go into the season. The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I don't like the fact that we're being linked with Scharner and Figueroa, I grew up in Wigan so I know a number of Wigan fans and not many of them rate either particularly highly.
I was discussing the potential of signings with my mate who follows Wigan home and away, he hates us and thinks it's hilarious that we're being linked with them both.
He says that the Scharner of a couple of years ago he'd be gutted to lose, and while the guy will always be popular at Wigan for what he's done for them (been there throughout the Premiership era) he thinks he's now past his best and isn't too sad that he's gone.
Figueroa he thinks is one of the players who is held in better regard by the people who don't watch him week in week out, he says he's one of the players that looks decent enough on motd. but would snatch their hands off of anyone who offered £7m as is being reported as that would be a great deal for them. He thinks Baines was a much better player when they had him and can't believe Figueroa is being linked with us.The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I share your concerns. My best friend is also huge Wigan fan and he told me he would be thrilled to get £7m for Figueroa.Originally posted by Exiled_red View PostI don't like the fact that we're being linked with Scharner and Figueroa, I grew up in Wigan so I know a number of Wigan fans and not many of them rate either particularly highly.

They were going to hold talks at the end of the season, but he announced before then that he was going to leave.Originally posted by PeteBest View PostDid Wigan offer Scharner a new contract? If they didn't, this speaks volumes.

Scharner faces contract wait
17 Apr 2010
Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has confirmed that talks over a new contract for Austria international Paul Scharner will have to wait until the end of the campaign.
The 30-year-old midfielder, who can also play in central defence, is a rumoured target for both Fulham and Stoke City, with his current contract running out at the end of the season.
However, Martinez says his sole focus at the moment is on making sure that the Latics avoid relegation.
The Spaniard commented: "We're in a position where we need to stay in the Premier League and that's our aim.
"There are six clubs fighting to avoid the remaining two relegation places and that's not going to change until late in the campaign.
"We need to sort that out first, which is our priority, then at the end of the season we will sit down and see how Paul is feeling and we'll make a decision.
"Paul has been here long enough, he knows the club well enough and I'm sure he'll have the right feeling to determine his future."

There's a recurring pattern here. During Rafa's tenure we've also been used to be linked with some dodgy names too, the only difference now is that it does seem to get worse. The recurring pattern, of course is that we don't seem to be investing a lot with quality signings (which hampered Rafa's reign).

Figueroa is 27 as well so he's more or less at the peak of his game, at least Insua should get better as he's only 21 (as people forget)Originally posted by Mostar View PostI share your concerns. I don't see Insua as our first choice (as a cover yes) but between those 2, to me Figueroa is not a step up.Originally posted by Exiled_red View PostFigueroa is 27 as well so he's more or less at the peak of his game, at least Insua should get better as he's only 21 (as people forget)
Taiwo, on the other hand, imo would be an improvement and it appears that the successful bidder can have his services for anywhere between £6-8.5M.Member #1 of the Luis Suarez fan club

Neither do I.
I'd like to see another left back come in as first choice (but not Figuroa) with Insua acting as cover and playing in cup games etc. I think Insua can and will improve. The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Optimistic view - we haven't bought anyone yet. Hodgson said he'd give everyone a chance and wants to see them in action first. So, while there's a lull the agents of players that Hodgson was looking at whilst at Fulham are trying to engineer their players a move to Liverpool now that he's there. All of the dodgy links are just paper/agent talk.
Pessimistic view - we are more skint than even we thought!
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the former, at least until we actually sign someone ****.

I know sections of our fanbase are not his biggest admirers, but he's young, gained a lot of experience in a tough league already, played more than a few times for Brazil, and would cost easily that much to adequately replace.
I’d be gutted if we let Lucas leave for £8m, although part of me nearly wants him to move on elsewhere and prove everyone wrong. It would be madness to let him go this year though. The lad clearly has talent, and although maybe not spectacular, he was still one of our most consistent players last year. I’m not sure we’ll ever get the see the Gremio ‘box-to-box’ midfielder that everyone craves, but I do think Rafa put a lot of time and effort into developing the defensive side of his game (not stifling him as some suggest) and he could mature into the complete midfielder if given the chance. This year could be make or break for him though as we do need to see more end product, but replacing him now for an unknown quantity would be very foolish in my opinion. If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?
