You do, of course, have a very good point there

Still wouldn't give it to Kuyt though.

As I said, personally I'd have no problem with Kuyt getting it. No doubt plenty will disagree but there you go.

I dont think Kuyt is anywhere near good enough to get the Number 7 shirt. But then, I'm also one of the people who wouldn't lose any sleep if Kuyt left the club, so I would say that!

Since 1892 how many players have worn the number 7 shirt? Somehow I don't think Keegan and Kenny had it the whole time. Its just a number, get over it

It's iconic, like it or not.

Obviously ideally we'd have a world class superstar wearing it, but that isn't going to happen anytime soon, and I'm not one for this "holding the shirt back" thing.

I think the shirt is only iconic when a great player is in it. We have had plenty of disappointments in the number and the images of the distant past haven't been tainted by it. On the basis it might be seen as putting more pressure on a player while we don't have a new superstar to hand it to I think Kuyt is as good a call as anyone as he is unlikely to be effected by it.

I would be more than happy for Kuyt to wear it. One of the most underrated and under appreciated players we have.

I also think that Kuyt wouldn't let all of the "pressure" surrounding the iconic nature of the shirt affect his play.

Crux of the issue mate. As you say, the fact that they're so ****ed off says it all. He's a class act and their fans are gutted that he's gone.
