      None of the above

Thought you were downplaying Clough's achievements with your comments about your sister would have done better than Greenwood, and the 'fact is he wasn't' comment. May have read it the wrong way though.

Simple fact is he did wonders at the clubs he was at apart from Leeds where he was never given the chance he deserved. He was a legend of the game and truly class manager. His remarks about hillsborough were the remarks of an Alcoholic for which he later apologised for. He would never had fitted in with the Humble mentality of LFC but you cannot take away his impact on the game.

Here is a quote from him which were bang on!

"If a player had said to Bill Shankly 'I've got to speak to my agent', Bill would have hit him. And I would have held him while he hit him."

That quote shows how much the game has, sadly, changed in recent years. Imagine how Shankly and Clough would have managed the inflated ego's/player power/agents in today's game?

By chance I've just watched The Damned United again (I'm gonna start the book again later too), and I was just saying the same to the wife. Imagine, say, Rafa and Ferguson going on TV and slugging it out like Clough and Revie did after Clough got the sack from Leeds! Although of course the dynamics of Clough and Revie's rivalry were much more intense.

Ha, that was superb, Clough is one of the greatest characters ever IMO.

I watched The Damned United the other night and there were obviously a lot of inaccuracies in the film. So, out of interest was the rivalry between Clough and Revie really born out following that cup game?

Cloughie was up there with Shanks and Jock Stein for sure but not quite LFC manager material.

Clough had the last laugh there though! Like they say at the end of the damned united. Revie failed with england, ended up in the middle east and his career ended with him being investigated for financial irregularities where Clough went on to become a double European cup winning manager.

As far as I know yeah, that's where it started but of course it snowballed as documented in the film. That Cup game though was actually played at Leeds, not at Derby as it's portrayed in the film (which invalidates that scene when Clough is cleaning The Baseball Ground from top to bottom). I remember reading Leeds really did kick Derby off the park that day which is where Clough's loathing for Revie and Leeds began.

I think the rivalry on the whole though was mainly due to Clough's feelings and outspoken stuff about 'dirty Leeds'.

He was easily as up himself, if not more.

Haha yeah he was every bit as up himself as Mourinho, and more, but much wittier and funnier with it. In his defence Mourinho does it all in a language which is not his own, but still...Clough was in a league of his own when it comes to managers of that ilk. And they're marked apart by their respective stances on gamesmanship.
