Because 442 is a crazy formation that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. The game has 'evolved' and anybody who still uses 442 is an idiot who can't keep up with the times. 442 only worked in the 20th century but not anymore. It had an expiration date

The squad he inherited from Rafa was geered up to play 4-2-3-1 and without wholesale changes to the playing staff it's the system Woy will have difficulty changing from.

Capello was one of the only manages at the World Cup that stuck to the 4-4-2 and he got slated for it. Football has changed and the 4-2-3-1 offers the most flexibility.
