Okay, we were close to signing David Cortes, a full-back who as far as I know ended up doing **** all in Spain.

Similarly Ibanez, although that was mainly paper talk and I don't know if it was for real, but we were linked continually and I don't think he ever left his club until recently when he signed for.............West Brom!
Is that the one that was Atletico and played for Spain? Central defender.

How about Lee Bowyer? It all seems like a bad dream now but he was on the verge of signing wasnt he?

alan smith from leeds wanted to come to LFC and was heard talking to Ged about it in the players lounge apparently.....

Dani Alves is the worst.....what a legendary signing that would have been.....

Bergkamp was linked as well....i think Collymore wasn't settling and there was talk of a part-exchange with Inter Milan - imagine Owen if he had Bergkamp pulling the strings behind him.....

Possibly the biggest transfer gaff I can remember was Souness turning down the chance to sign Cantona in 1991.

Trevor Francis also made the same mistake at Wednesday, in fact they were closer than we were. He played for Wednesday in an indoor 5-a-side tournament and expected to sign straight after, but Francis wanted to see him play on a full-size pitch on turf and Cantona told him to stick it and Leeds 'swooped'.

No we didn't. There was no link at all between the two situations. Liverpool had had a bid of around £4m accepted for Ronaldo when Man U came in with what was seen at the time as a crazy higher bid of £12m. A move for the two French players were not a consideration in Liverpool's move for Ronaldo

He was all set to sign for top dogs Liverpool in 1972 but failed a medical due to high blood pressure, mainly as a result of to his legendary prowess in the bed hopping stakes. Manager Bill Shankly remained keen on the player and told him to take a rest and come back for another medical afterwards. True to form Worthington went on holiday and partied hard for a few weeks. He came back and failed the medical again. The move fell through with Worthington quipping: "I just saw it as their bad luck."
Apparently "high blood pressure" was a euphemism for a more basic infection he'd picked up but which would have been unseemly at the time to mention in the media

I might be wrong here but weren't we on the verge of signing Fabrizio Ravanelli around 97/98?
