Two very high profile players we missed out on in the 80s that we tried to sign having agreed terms with the selling clubs were Bryan Robson and Gary Lineker. Robson went with the bloke he knew well from West Brom - Ron Atkinson who'd moved on to Man U, while Lineker was put off by the fact that Rush was the man in possession of the centre-forward role so thought he'd be playing second string and went to Everton instead.

It came out a few years back. I presume it was in Joe Fagan's time, but it might have been at the end of Paisley's time I suppose - can't remember the exact time line. Anyway whoever it was described the situation just as I explained it. The Liverpool member of staff who wrote the thing I saw about the situation said that they couldn't persuade Lineker that if they were going to pay the then astronomical fee of, I seem to recall, £800K then he would certainly figure all the time. But he just couldn't see Liverpool playing both him and Rush, so went across the park insteadOriginally posted by Shaggy View PostNever knew that about Lineker.

I think the link was that Ronaldo wanted **** loads more money a week compared to what the club had Poodle and Talc on and they weren't prepared to match his wage demends, Fergies comes in and rest is history.Originally posted by Redspin View PostNo we didn't. There was no link at all between the two situations. Liverpool had had a bid of around £4m accepted for Ronaldo when Man U came in with what was seen at the time as a crazy higher bid of £12m. A move for the two French players were not a consideration in Liverpool's move for RonaldoThe King was back for a short while. Long live The King.

On the Cortes transfer it fell through because Rafa thought that Honchez was leaving and because he didn't there was no money to find the deal hence it didn't matereslise.
Surprised no one mentioned Gabi Milito. Failed a medical and stays fit for the next 3 seasons bring a great player for Zaragoza after our 6m offer would have done the trick. He then signs for Barca for 14m and has been crocked for the better part if 2 seasons only really having 1 complete season with them. Our medical team for once made an accurate, yet delayed prediction. Even though he'd have been a great signing pretty chugged we missed out and got Agger instead.
Didn't know about that, but would have loved him. Rav such an inspiration.Originally posted by Rudo View PostI might be wrong here but weren't we on the verge of signing Fabrizio Ravanelli around 97/98?

3 pages and nobody's yet mentioned van Der Vaart.
We've been signing him every summer since the internets started. Or probably to be more accurate, since the year he was the best wonderkid in Champ Manager. I think we did actually come close to buying him several times, but it feels like there's never been a summer without a VdV link.I could not dig, I dared not rob:
Therefore I lied to please the mob.
Now all my lies are proved untrue
And I must face the men I slew.
What tale shall serve me here among
Mine angry and defrauded young?
