    Man marking v zonal

Ok, i dont really want to discuss it that much.

But i didnt think i could justify a whole new thread just for this beaut...

Both teams losing runners from corners. Man marking has been poor. Don't tell Andy Gray. He'll go lalalalala

Early days I know but I prefer zonal. We just executed it badly last year when the whole team was playing **** in all departments. And as our players have been so used to the system for so long, it'll take a while to get to grips with man-to-man. I'd rather we'd stuck with zonal.

I noticed it during the game tonight, and thought exactly the same. Why expose yourself to a new system. I guess the powers that be have been listening to Sky.

Although that said, there were more outfield players available for releasing the ball out again.

Eh? If the Hodge prefers man to man, then obviously he's going to implement it - and we have to get our heads around it at SOME point. How else do you suggest doing it?

Mate hodgson has lived and breathed man to man all his working life........I dont think Purslow has ordered Hodgson man to man after watching monkey man and grays ranting

Fair enough. The comment was a throw away one. No cynicism about it, except the media have been baying against it for donkey years.

Funny this conversation. I remember watchin MOTD on Sunday night and the commentator claiming Reds fans will be happy with the change to man to man. He seemed to think we'd all fallen for Sky's bull**** about zonal.

The thing is, is that I can't believe how many people don't get it, especially when the stats do add up in favout of it. (caveat, I seem to remember, probably half asleap through a Tomkins tomb). And how much of a beating stick it became with rotation etc.

One thing I do welcome, is having outfield players to hit on the break.

Zonal all day long for me, man to man is draconian in that it allows you to aportion blame after a goal has been scored - He was your man, you were meant to be marking him etc... it also encourages the wrestling like Poulson and Carra were doing all last night which means at some point we will have a penalty given against us because of it.

Zonal is about the prevention of chances by filling the space and is a (fairly) newish system in England which is why dinosaur ex pros don't understand it and ridicule it

With regards to zonal, and the fact that a running attacker's always going to get the jump over a static defender - how do you counter this then?

I guess the players are now used to zonal marking so changing systems, there is likely to be a difficult transition period. If we play man marking system we can only judge it at the end of the season.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Correct me if I'm wrong but basically zonal is where you have four players taking up zones on the six yard line, typically these are your tallest/strongest headers of the ball - this is your zone. Arguably there are a couple of other fixed positions too, perhaps men on the post(s), and maybe a bloke stopping any near post flick ons. The Rest? Well surely they are marking players!

So your flexible players need to stop/block/impede the best attackers to stop them getting a running jump on a zonal player.

                            Simples.

That's how I see it. Not all ten of your players mark a zone, as you say. Even zonal marking is still a blend of zonal and man-to-man, as I understand it.
