What is Steven Gerrard's best position?

But on the flipside I remember being miserable most weeks under Uncle Roy cos the results were ****, and in a much less competitve league too. I remember I used to say, ad nauseum, "it's all well and good playing fancy football but we get beat all the time"!Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

Instead of box to box, can't we have attacking mid, because I don't see him as a box to box player now. I think he's much more effective, if he doesn't have to track back, which is why i've said free role behind the striker as I think that is his best position period.
He will always cut inside from the right, and isn't a winger by any stretch of the imagination, and therefore won't always be in the position to deliver a cross, which at least 2 of our strikers thrive on.
He's no longer box to box for me, because seeing him track back all the time, would waste his attacking prospects because he'd be bringing out of defense.Thomas Hicks Senior

Just think there are more strong teams now...better players playing for lesser teams, and four teams capable of winning the league. Arguably, in the 90s, there was only ever really one or two at a push.Originally posted by Red ChilliWhy do you think it was less competitive? Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

Playing as a box-to-box midfielder makes the most of his attributes. Whether the team as a whole benefits from him playing somewhere else is a different argument altogether which is why IMO the 'wherever Rafa wants him to play' comments are a bit churlish.Last edited by Red_Polo; 25-10-06, 04:28 AM.Like blood on iron

This has been said over and over.....Originally posted by lfc4everffs, wherever Rafa tells him on the day.
When I applied for my job I was given a paticular task to cover.
If my 'boss' turns round one day and says - 'OK your on bog duty' (a promotion for me BTW!), am I supposed to be pleased as punch and just do it for the sake of the company / boss?
Am I ****.
And if I am to leave as I am unhappy in my new 'bog' job, it's hardly fair of others around me to say '**** off then your not worthy of the uniform!'
Especially when the goalposts (no pun intened) were moved!

So did someone write a job description for SG when he joined as a boy, saying he would play in CM? Course they didn't. In football there is no "I" in team.*
Football isn't exactly like real life is it ffs.
I'm sure Kolo Toure didn't join Arsenal to play as a CB, and now he is one of the best in the league in that position. Not sure if this has any relevance or not to the point though
*but there is a "u" in c*nt. Where the asterix is.

To be fair this all rather assumes that being given the license of where to go on the pitch and freedom to think much less about defensive duties are an arduous pain which Stevie has to endure. In actual fact when he played well in the position last season he entusiastically burst into the middle, often leaving the right exposed. Frankly his current role, is a lot like being asked to do all the good bits of his old job but a bit more forward and to occasionally wander to the right.Originally posted by IconThis has been said over and over.....

I think the free role, on one side of midfield ideally suits him when he is enthusiastic about the game. Maybe however he needs a rest or a bit of the old central midfield fighting to get his enthusiasm back."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

I personally think gerrards best position is right midfield. I think the point LFC4ever was making is that Gerrard is not bigger than the team and should play wherever he is told to play, and give his all there.Originally posted by Red ChilliRafa is the gaffa but that doesn't mean that it's Gerrard's best position does it? It just means that's where Rafa wants him to play.

Yes I know, but I think he lost track of the original question. We all know he's not bigger than the team, there's no-one who believes that and it's been done to death on several threads but this one is just a question about what his best position is.Originally posted by paulcooper4I personally think gerrards best position is right midfield. The reason I don't see him as a right midfielder is because I like my right midfielders to go outside their man, peg it to the touchline and whip a cross in to the strikers. Gerrard does not do this often enough but in the centre of the park he wins the ball, he pings the ball into space, he bursts into the box and he scores some cracking long shots.Originally posted by Gordon Brown

None of our right wingers hits the byline and crosses. When pennant cuts inside though he falls over, when Gerrard cuts inside however he scores 23 goals. It is better for the team, which I believe is what we all want, no?Originally posted by Red ChilliYes I know, but I think he lost track of the original question.
