The 27-year-old has joined Roy Hodgson's side for 14million euros (£11.5million), the Premier League club announced on their official website. Portugal international Meireles has signed a four-year contract and will add weight to a Reds midfield which was looking short on numbers following the departures of Mascherano and Alberto Aquilani.

And, quoted in the Sunday Express, he said: "Roy Hodgson was key to me coming here because he worked so hard to sign me. I am Meireles and not Mascherano and that will be clear to the fans. I hope one day the Liverpool fans will remember me for being successful."Meireles has won four titles with Porto and been capped 38 times by Portugal, playing in all four of his country's games at this summer's World Cup.

Liverpool on Friday agreed a deal to send Mascherano to Barcelona after the midfielder, whose family could not settle on Merseyside, was reportedly unprepared to play for the club.

Aquilani also departed for Juventus in a loan deal which brought to an end, at least temporarily, an underwhelming and injury-hit spell in the city in which he failed adequately to replace Xabi Alonso.

With Liverpool financially constrained as owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks attempt to sell the club, fans have had to make do with limited arrivals this summer - Christian Poulsen from Juventus and Joe Cole on a free transfer from Chelsea being the headline names.

On the pitch Liverpool have started the season in uninspiring fashion under Hodgson, with last week's 3-0 defeat by Manchester City particularly dispiriting.

They at least have a Europa League campaign to look forward to after overcoming Trabzonspor this week.

Meireles, at home in the centre of midfield, scored in Portugal's 7-0 win over South Korea in South Africa this summer.

I hate to move to the negative side but could this pave the way for Lucas to move on, I mean we now have Gerrard,Raul,Lucas and Poulsen that can all play that position, a bit further back but i'm presuming Jonjo will want games here and there aswelll.

so im presuming our fully fit non suspended midfield would be

          Gerrard Raul
          Kuyt Cole Jova

depending on Roys preferance, Lucas might not even play half the games he did last season, and that could piss him right off.

But; welcome to the club Raul i have high hopes for you,

Welcome to Liverpool Raul - lets hope you don't turn out to be as **** as I think you are going to be. One things for sure, I doubt you will turn out to be as big a cunt as Mascherano turned out to be.

it's pahetic, but you have to have even a sad amount of hair for a combover.

there's a guy who rides my bus who is nearly but not quite bald on top and he's youngish and it's fluffy. i will him to cut all his hair off a la michael stipe on a daily basis.

I used to catch a train for year and yrs when I lived in sydney yrs ago. One day the train door opened early and the wind caught his comb over and stood it up dead straight in the air and when the train stopped it fell back into place perfectly. I was laughing so hard the rest of the train must of thought I'd gone mad.

                        re Michael Stipe

Nobody probably did, but if they caught the Porto vs Rio Ave game today the commentator (who isn't that bad surprisingly) stated that he thought that Meireles was and I quote "become a legend at the Anfield club" as I said in the other thread some people may be surprised at how average he can be - and he's setting himself up for ridicule, although, that being said maybe he knows something I don't haha.

Haha quite literally taxi. I had to catch a train from there during the day and it was even dodgy then. I live in the Northern Beaches so I don't do trains
