Yeah I think Rafa got somewhat bad press in relation to him "only bringing in foreign kids". There were quite a few examples of him bringing in the likes of Paul Anderson, Jack Hobbs. Okay the majority didn't/haven't (yet) come to fruition, but he hardly had a foreign only policy as some "commentators" might have made out.

But it is nice to see some English lads coming through the ranks and also performing well at their respective international level.

Very possibly. Our central midfield is relatively crowded though, Gerrard, Poulson, Meireles, Lucas and even Spearing are all in his way. That being said, there was talk of Lucas leaving in the summer, I'm sure the debt replayments wouldn't mind the £5m or so we'd get for him in the next window, and Spearing shouldn't be too much of an obstacle, but we'll see, I'll be impressed if Shelvey does manage to force his way into the team this season anyway.

Spearing isn't really in his way, there's no chance he's making it here. The ones who are in his way are Poulsen and Lucas. Hodgson doesn't rate Lucas as he was willing to sell him, only reason he's here is that he couldn't replace him so quickly. Shelvey is a far superior player to Lucas in every way, especially his demeanor.

Poulsen is expected to line up with Meireles and Gerrard in our first choice midfield but when you consider that Poulsen is a suspension waiting to happen, and Gerrard is crocked three months every season, Shelvey will get his chance. Once he gets that chance, I believe he will be so impressive that it will be very difficult for us to drop him back.


Our first choice midfield at the end of the season will be, I'll stick my neck out:

Kuyt Gerrard Cole

The only one who has played any first team games at all is Kelly. It's a pretty bold statement fella, but I hope you're right

I can see him get some valuable minutes in FA and Curling Cup possibly though.

Spearing I agree with you about, but there have been a few signs that Roy considers him an option. Lucas, well, I'm not so sure Roy has all that much say about players leaving (see comments he made about Insua for example), but I can see him moving on relatively soon, while he still has decent bankable value. And as for Poulson, you say that about suspensions, but actually his disciplinary record isn't all that bad for a player of his ilk, barring a few high-profile incidents. Considering he hasn't got the gob on him Mascher had, I suspect he'll be suspended a bit less than you think (cue a glut of straight reds now I've said that).

That being said, I hope you're right, I'm just not convinced we're not jumping the gun just a little. It wasn't so long ago half the site was advocating putting Nemeth straight in the first team (I know they're very different cases but still).
