Hodgson will take Kop stars out of the firing line
Roy Hodgson will stick to his guns and spare his stars the ordeal of an early season slog through the Europa League foothills.
The Liverpool manager will rest the likes of Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard and even Jamie Carragher for the tie with Steaua Bucharest on Thursday, even if it means yet more criticism for his under-fire side.
Torres in particular came in for some savage stick for his performance at Birmingham at the weekend, where his body language suggested he was desperately unhappy.
But Hodgson believes the striker must be protected as he carefully continues a comeback from injury problems that have dogged him for the past two seasons.
"It is unfeasible to ask them to play so many games over what is going to be a long campaign, and unrealistic to believe they can sustain it over a whole season."
Hodgson will be true to his word by taking Torres and Gerrard out of the firing line tomorrow night, and instead give youngsters like Jay Spearing another chance to impress.
But he will give new signing Raul Merieles his full debut for the club following his £7million summer move from Porto, and Joe Cole will also play a part as looks for playing time on his return from suspension.
Paul Konchesky has shaken off a hamstring injury and will also play, as he looks to improve his fitness before the big game with Manchester United on Sunday, while Daniel Agger will get a run out in his preferred centre half position.
I picked up on that too - thought it was nearer £11m.
The rest of the article comes at no surprise though. I reckon we'll be out of the Europa League before Chrimbo, and our 'youff's' will have had 6 games worth of European experience which is all fair game in my eyes.
europa (uefa) cup has always been on thursday night
Not entirely true, as some of the games are played on wednesday. Our home game against Utrecht for example is played on a wednesday, the 15th of december
