I thought Kelly showed signs of being the new Carra - which is great for our centre defence, but not so great as a full back. And I thought Spearing just looked out of his depth in the first half, but good in a dominant side in the second half...at 23 years old, who would he replace in the squad?

N'Gog is the one who befuddles me, to me he is an enigma. So much about him screams 'not good enough' but he keeps scoring goals, and as long as he's doing that he's worthy of his place in the squad...can't work out if he's going to become a top class player or another Milan Baros.

Spearing is 21 by the way guys!!!! So many times i have seen people posting he's 23
I think it's a foul, and if the ref gives it. He got to give a penalty. I know it's outside the box, but you see them given that close to the area. So if the ref gives it he's got to give the penalty as it so close to the area. But I think it's a penalty. Robbie Savage 8/11/06

Are you watching Manchester United? Are you watching Chelsea? This is Liverpool F.C taking over the bloody world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well spotted. Jay Francis Spearing (born 25 November 1988).

Even the commentators on tele last night said he was 23.

I found myself swearing several times during the first half as he attempted some hopeless passes, which, against a better team, we would have been punished harder for. A much better second half though. His shooting isn't that great either, not knocking him, just don't think he'll ever make it here.
I'd love Spearing to succeed but can't honestly see it happening. Thought Lucas looked strong and classy when he came on - suspect not everyone will agree though.

Can't ever remember seeing Anfield so empty for a (reasonably) serious game. Thought I'd missed some call to boycott the game.

In fairness 2 years is a massive difference in terms of whether or not a player will make it.

For instances, David Beckham only started getting more than the odd game for United when he was 20, and he was a highly talented player who everyone knew would be a star.

Just because lads aren't regulars by the time they are 19/20 it doesn't mean they will never make it.

I think that around 23 is the make or break point but before that players develop and different rates and the position people play also seems to have an impact on when you make it through to the first team.

Also, being as you mentioned Beckham, it's worth noting that he went on loan (if only for a few games) to Preston and I think those experiences can be valuable as much for taking a player out of his comfort zone as anything. People seem to think of loans as a career death knell with us whereas I think they should be seen as a challenge and the players response the thing that people focus on.

I remember John Terry going on loan to Forest.

And Defoe at Bournemouth. He scored some amazing goals for them.

Steve bruce had agreed terms with CHelsea to buy him when at Huddersfield that same season, only for Terry to pull out of the deal

although in Spearings case not sure how much difference it will make, unless he grows 6" he will never make it as a top CM in the premier league.

Mascherano was only a couple of inches taller than him...
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

And Beckham went to Preston didnt he? Great quiz question that, 'for which club did David Beckham make his league debut?' So many get it wrong.
