Originally posted by saj View PostSeriously guys I have a question. I was too young too remember the days of Dalglish and my first memories of LFC are of Souness in charge, I'd say 1993. I know Souness more or less ruined the great LFC team. I don't remember how bad the team played under Souness - a genuine question: is the team under Hodgson worse than it was under Souness? We won the FA cup with Souey, i can't see us winning jack **** with Roy.Originally posted by Shaggy View PostIt's impossible to say really, different eras and all that. We have a much better squad now than we did once Souness got his grubby mits on it. I dare say we played a bit of football every now and again though. Now it's just......nothing. Absolutely nothing football.
Roy hasn't had the time to do a Souness and ship out the good players and bring in the dross, he's made a good start though. We come not to play.

Like I said, if memory serves we played some football at times. We couldn't defend for toffee back then but still scored some good goals at times, played a bit of football every now and again. Now it's just nothing, we create no chances, we don't score any good goals.....I think the style of play (if you could say we have one) is every bit as bad now, if not worse.Originally posted by saj View PostIm not talking players. I still firmly believe still that the current squad is good enough to finish in the top four. I know the squad back then, Souness destroyed and built up again with some atrocious signings. Add to that, he fis fitness regime led players to get injured (think several players suffered with identical Achilles problems). I'm talking style of play: is it worse? Did Souness at least get his sides attempt to play football? Did his team slections make sense given the ****e players we had back then? Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

I don't remember so many square pegs in right holes with Souness. He might have bought a **** player but at least he knew where to play them.Originally posted by saj View PostIm not talking players. He got rid of players such as Beardsley, Saunders and Staunton. Staunton in particular would have been a massive asset. I certainly think we could have won the title under Roy Evans we had a better left hand side - maybe having Staunton could have helped us.Originally posted by Rich View PostFrom what I remember and what I've read afterwards Souness rightly knew that we had to rebuild the squad. The squad was aging without the same numbers of quality youngsters coming through, problem for Souness is that arguably he sold the wrong players and then spent a lot on average English men.
It's difficult to make a direct comparison playing wise as the game has moved on massively since then - you watch back and we look awful but then pretty much all teams were.
I'd say that so far Hodgson is the worst I've seen at Anfield. Unsuited on all levels.

Really Roy I must have missed that. The degree to which Roy has no clue shows no signs of diminishing. We were so narrow so narrow, so very narrow. Merieles kept coming inside sometimes to exactly the positions Lucas wanted to be in. I don't blame him, as clearly he is not a wide mid. This left GJ having tobomb forward same with Kelly on the other side. This is asking way too much from our full backs. Particularly without Mascherano who would normally use his energy to drop in. We will get ****ing destroyed by any team with a degree of tactical savy.Originally posted by Shaggy View PostRoy Hodgson believes Liverpool can be pleased to have gained a point against an impressive Utrecht side on Thursday night.
Both sides had chances to prevent the game ending 0-0, though with last-ditch interventions required from Pepe Reina and Raul Meireles, Hodgson had no complaints at returning home with a share of the spoils.
The result leaves Liverpool top of Group K, two points ahead of both Napoli and Utrecht.
The manager said: "It was a good point. We knew it was going to be a tough game. The occasions when they created some chances were largely of our own making. They were the result of unfortunate individual errors. I thought the shape of the team and the way we approached the game - I can have nothing but praise for my team.
"We created some good chances ourselves also. It wasn't a dull 0-0, there was activity at both ends of the field.
"Utrecht did well. They were as determined and committed as we expected them to be, so we had to be at our best defensively and we were.
"We saw some very determined chasing down from the Dutch forwards, their crossing and attacking the ball from crossing was good and it was easy to see why Utrecht have got a very good home record.
"So it's a good point to take back to Liverpool. Four points out of two games. It's the first time we haven't won one of these games but to be honest it would have been unfortunate for them if we'd won the game tonight. They would have felt hard done by. For me, a draw was a more than satisfactory result.
"I think the group is going to be very tight. The other game finished in a draw. We're top with four, then Utrecht and Napoli with two points and Steaua Bucharest with one point. It's already quite close and I think it will be close right until the end with the way this group is panning out."
Asked about the performance of Fernando Torres, who had a great second-half chance saved, Hodgson said: "There was some good combinations between him and the wide players and Dirk Kuyt. He worked very hard but he's still missing that elusive goal.
"There were a couple of quite good occasions for him to score but I think he'll feel it was a good 90-minute workout for him and another step in the right direction."
Hodgson was also quizzed on Meireles playing on the right.
He said: "We don't play with wingers. The way he plays and the way Joe Cole plays, we think (playing wide midfield) is more than suited to their qualities.
"We saw evidence of that in the game because they often got into situations where they received and turned with the ball - especially in the first half. I think we can get some use from Raul Meireles there with his passing ability."
His comment about Merieles passing ability is also so banal. I mean you could say the same about any player really.
I am starting to get really annoyed by his (Roys) lack of fight, and his acceptance that what he sees seems to be alright. We are going to get beaten again soon, potentially a 2 or 3 nil. you can just sense it. Blackpool looks worrying and the derby terrifying.Modifying post.

Shouldn't have sold Stan. But these were the days of the overseas player limits.Originally posted by saj View PostHe got rid of players such as Beardsley, Saunders and Staunton. It was his attitude rather him being totally inept, he clashed with senior players and then they fecked off.Originally posted by saj View PostHe got rid of players such as Beardsley, Saunders and Staunton. Souness can also be credited for giving many of the Spice boys their chance. We come not to play.

That I agree with - he did help to nurture Redknapp, McManaman and Fowler. All 3 of my favourite players in the 90's. If only we had a player like McManaman in the current team.Originally posted by Imy View PostIt was his attitude rather him being totally inept, he clashed with senior players and then they fecked off.

Hodgson's reply: "I don't know"!!!!Originally posted by Shaggy View PostIt's ever so reassuring to know that Roy doesn't know what Meireles' best position is, and also readily confesses to not having a clue whether Torres is better with or without a partner. Lovely stuff.
I can't quite believe he's said that, what is he thinking FFS.
I don't believe he's got long left in the job you know chaps, think he'll be off soon.Klopp on LFC vs MUFC (March 9th 2016) - "This is why I love football. This is why we watched it when we were young. I can still not have enough of it."
