    You're mad mate.

If you cut going to the game off you have SO much more time and money to do more interesting things it's untrue.

          The nature of addiction, perhaps

I know if we carried on with the Yanks and Roy for the next three years I'd be doing my best to switch off from it all.
Frankly, anyone who can just switch off or switch on their support was never a supporter in the first place.

The whole thing about being a supporter is that you don't really have a choice and can't stop supporting like going on a diet or giving up beer or something.

I was clearly brainwashed successfully by my father, as by the time I was aware of football as a game and understood where Liverpool were in the league (Division 2 at the time) I was a supporter without really knowing how it happened.

The fact that we were in Division 2 - I can clearly remember Shankly becoming manager - was utterly irrelevant. I was a supporter and could do nothing about it. It was as much a part of who I was and am as my personality.

I was extremely lucky I suppose that we went on to become super-successful, but it wouldn't have mattered if we'd gone down even further in the league because they were my team for better or worse.

It isn't all success though, not even in the 60s. I well remember the completely trophy-free period under Shankly from winning the league in 1966 to doing so again in 1973, along with the UEFA Cup. That seven-year period is always strangely overlooked in Shankly's record by many fans, but we we weren't much good and had many lousy performances, culminating in losing in the cup to second division Watford around 1970 I think.

But these periods pass and the current one will too. At least we have won the CL and the FA Cup in recent times. I would have been happy with a League Cup in the Shankly drought years.

So, if you're a supporter, things will definitely change for the better, but if you're indifferent to the team because of their current plight at least you can console yourself with the fact that you've finally discovered that you were never really a proper supporter in the first place and can withdraw from that arena and devote yourself to something you actually are interested in

For my part I can't wait for tomorrow's game. I know deep down that hapless Hodgson will still play the ridiculous 4-4-2 and we'll be hoofing the ball upfield all day and surrendering midfield to the mighty Seasiders, but I can't help myself. I'll take it on the chin and will bide my time until we've got a top team and can challenge again. That's what supporters do

Nice sentiments Stu- hopefully we'll be back on track soon. I've supported the Reds for about 30 years and we've never been this poor.

Somewhat over zealous and ott there, it was all light hearted.

You cut quite a 'houllier-esque' figure, young william.

                          Is it really though?

I cant undersand being able to 'choose' to support or go to games, it's like switching one's support on and off, as if it's a tap or a light switch.

You can have varying levels of interest, but the support remains I find.
