Gerrard hopes for Shelvey

Put him in the starting line up and I bet he'll be better than Lucas/Poulsen. If he gets picked in the starting line up just once, he won't lose that spot.Originally posted by Alex View PostNo he hasn't earn t his chance. He has played a few games for the reserves and some for the England U19's
He will be a good player in the future im sure of it. But now, you must be joking. He is just a kid. He barely played for Charlton last year. Put him out to a lower Prem club in Januray and see what he is made off. Not now though. That would **** us up even more than we are. I think nearly everyone realises that.
Shame we have a manager who hates selecting talented players who can play football.

If we do and he is awful, we risk destroying him. Completely shattering his confidence. I dont think he is better than Lucas at the moment. Poulsen yes, but he is one of the worst players to ever pull on the shirt at the moment.Originally posted by JohnDoe View PostPut him in the starting line up and I bet he'll be better than Lucas/Poulsen. Shelvy is not ready. He needs a season with us in a Premier League squad.
If the Manager wont select Talented young players, who on earth is picking Kelly?*Except Michael, who died.

Rodwell, wilshire, Rooney, Fabregas and many more all played for the frst team younger than Shelvey, he is 18 not 15!Originally posted by Alex View PostIf we do and he is awful, we risk destroying him. I don't think we would destroy his confidence with a few games and if we did he isnt good enough mentally anyway!!!
On the other hand bringing him now and all he needs to do his show energy and a forward pass and thats more than Poulsen has done so far......and there is no way on earth he can be as bad as Lucas whn we first started playing with him._____________________________________
Weak willed, Wank or do they have a masterplan?
Think we have the answer..Slot!!

Kelly gets in by default as we have no other players in that position. In the summer Roy tried to sign luke young to cover RB so that shows you how much faith he has in Kelly.Originally posted by Alex View PostIf we do and he is awful, we risk destroying him. With regards Shelvey, he should at least be on the bench. He's a better player than Jay Spearing, who is ahead of him. If Shelvey was on the bench we could bring him on and see how he performs.Forwards.......

There's a huge difference between the reserves and the first team though Arn.Originally posted by Arn View PostSimply because I think he is the best talent we have had since the days of Gerrard, Owen and Fowler.
He totally dominates when he play for us and for the U21 national team.
He has earned the chance to play in the starting XI. It's time to give him that chance.
Having said that, despite being a different type of player to Poulsen, I think I'd rather see Shelvey in the team, rather than the useless Dane.

Just my take on the young lad:
Ok he's 19 so far from the finished product and this isn't meant to be critical of him but before he arrived I was lead to believe he was a 'similar' player to a Gerrard however I just can't see it. And here's why...
Gerrard at the same age had terrible injury problems but was obviously an athlete - fast over the ground, quick to turn, and powerful. He'd not fully grown but there was something there you could see.
Shelvey IMO isn't in the same class when it comes to athleticism - he's neither fast or quick to turn, and doesn't appear to have that explosive quality which was apparent in Gerrard. This might change but I'm doubtful it will, usually you can't radically change a players athleticism unless they're carrying excess weight and he doesn't look like he is.
Now the good news - I think we've not got a Gerrard on our hands but potentially a Huddlestone/Alonso/Pirlo- type player, or potentially so. He looks like he has all the ability to play the deep playmaker role. Good with the ball at his feet, positive, passing ability, and strong. I wonder whether he should start looking at those type of players and modifying his game accordingly.
Just my opinion...Last edited by Rich; 16-12-10, 10:19 AM.James Philip Milner Fanclub #1

Didn't see last nights game but I have thougt Shelvey to be more of a central midfielder than Gerrard who is more of an attacking midfielder for me, I think he has the potential to be a quality one as well.
* The above is posted in my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

His lack of athleticism is scary but he's fine with the ball at his feet. He'll need 'legs' next to him though. Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

At first I had similar doubts about Alonso, thought he lacked engine and explosiveness but he had other things to buy him time on the pitch though like vision, ability to turn and shield the ball etc. so I think there is a lot to it that Shelvey should look to these players to model his game. Wish Xabi was here stillOriginally posted by Shaggy View Post

Shelvey is the slowest human being i have ever seen. Still very young and learning but as Shaggy said his lack of athleticism he may find it difficult in the premier league. People say Xabi was slow, he was but not quite as slow as Shelvey, jesus Shelvey makes Xabi look like Usain Bolt. But Xabi had very quick feet and his brain was always working at 100mph.
Shelvey has a lot of work to do to improve and adapt to the top flight, hopefully he does.
