The 30-year-old suffered a shoulder injury during a training session with the Oranje last month but made a quick recovery in time to make an emotional return to former club Utrecht in the Europa League a fortnight ago.

Liverpool will assess the extent of the damage once the attacker, who is currently under observation in hospital, returns to Melwood but van Marwijk claims that he will be sidelined for a considerable period with early indications showing he has torn ankle ligaments.

He said: "Dirk wanted to play on but our doctor prevented that and told me to substitute him.

"He is now in a hospital but following the doctor's first opinion it could be very serious and keep him sidelined for a long time."

News of Kuyt’s setback will come as a devastating blow for Roy Hodgson ahead of Sunday’s showdown with Everton, with the under-fire Kop boss desperate to turn the club’s on field fortunes around with them currently languishing in the relegation zone.

His misery was further compounded when Daniel Agger limped out of Denmark’s 2-0 win over Cyprus shortly before the interval with a calf strain.

Brings back fond memories of Xabi trying to stamp off a broken ankle to play on.

Edit: Fond in the sense that the players cared that much then, obvioulsy not because he broke his ankle.

I watched the Holland v Sweden match last night. His injury looked really bad. He went up for a header and his right ankle turned right over on landing. The slow motion replays looked awful. They took him off and he got some treatment and wanted to play on, but they wouldnt let him, he looked really pissed off at not getting back on the pitch.

From seeing the slow motion replay, I think he will be out a few months with ligament damage

                Out for three months

Liverpool's confidence that Fernando Torres will be fit for Sunday's Merseyside derby has been tempered by fears Dirk Kuyt could be out for three months with an ankle injury.

The Holland forward suffered the injury during the 4-1 Euro 2012 qualifying victory over Sweden last night. A scan was unable to provide a clear diagnosis due to swelling around his right ankle and it may be several days before the 30-year-old discovers the extent of the problem. The early indication, however, is that Kuyt sustained serious ligament damage and will be out until January as a consequence.

Kuyt's injury is a major setback for Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson, who is also awaiting confirmation of the back injury that forced Daniel Agger out of Denmark's win over Cyprus.

**** that, seriously **** that. Maxi will probably play now and he's a waste of space.

3 months of Maxi, we're getting relegated.
