Cole would probably be excellent in a Rafa 4-3-2-1 system. Just like Meireles. I have a feeling that it was Rafa that wanted Cole and Meireles and that Purslow still signed them even that we sacked Rafa and replaced him with Roy.

I doubt that Roy wanted Meireles. The comments he made after we signed him points to that.
I agree they'd be better, but they'd still bf some way of top form. At present they are not even getting the basics right. Torres clean through, should have shot or laid it on for lucas, instead he did neither. Gerrard after a lay back by Maxi gets it closer to the corner flag.

And that's not to mention the countless mis controlling of a ball and failure to pass to a team mate. I agree that in a system they are unsuited to they will not be as effective. But if they can't do the basics they won't be much use in any system.

And regardless of whether a player is played high up the pitch, asked to play deep, rb, cm, st or sweeper, they should still be able to trap a ball and pass.
    Forwards.......

Cole needs to get the bascis right before we can start thinking of him as a flair player, or someone to change a game.
I've never rated Cole to be honest and I think I said a few weeks back I expected him to disappoint many people on this forum

He seems to have that problem with at least 10 outfield players though

He more or less gave away that Meireles wasn't scouted by him. That points to that it was Purslow/Rafa that wanted him and not Roy.

Cole was signed so early that we must have talked to him for months. That also points to that he is a Purslow/Rafa signing.

I think Cole was a Hodgson/Purslow signing. Think they both went for Cole as a Marquee signing and a signal of intent.......and then signed Poulsen/Konch

I have never been the biggest JC fan either. And he has thus far benefitted from basically not being as bad a signing as Konchesky or Poulsen, but so far I would say we need to see a lot more from Joe for him to begin to win the doubters over. Again it could be argued that with a better manager and a more expansive playing style Joe would look a better player... In actual fact does the playing style Royston has us working to suit ANY of our players.

Watching us defend reminds me of under 8's school football. The left back stands on the left corner of the box, the right back on the right corner of the 18 yrd box and so on. Rigid, defensive and easy to play through.

So that would imply the only signings due to Hodgson have been Poulsen and Konchesky

I think Cole was a player we'd have signed whoever was in charge, I think Gerrard and Carra sold the club to him.

I think Meireles was recommended by our scouting team.

I think only Poulsen and Konchesky were Roys signings. And they've been the ones most out their depth. In fairness I see why Roy made both. Poulsen has just nit adjusted to the league and looks past his best. Konchesky was lacking fitness when he joined and struggled to settle. Konch has looked better of late but will never be LFC class. But he's getting to the point where I'd consider him as a deputy to a better lb.

I think we had to get Cole because he was a good player available on a free, a player of his quality would be going for at least £10m+ if he were under contract. But he's not shown us anything yet. I imagine him being like the Harry Kewell signing, everyone being made up when we sign him, but him ultimately being a let down, shows some signs of promise but not enough (not that I'm writing him off, that's just how it seems at the moment).

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

I'd agree with you exiled. What matters now is we are in a position to bring someone in who can do a job if he doesn't step up.

I don't know what to think of late really. Start of the season and even 5-6 games in I'd have had Lucas, maxi and Soto as definite casualties but I have to hold my hands up and say they've stepped up to the plate lately. At present I'd keep all three in the first team and would be looking elsewhere before I got rid of them.

I think the priorities in who needs to be replaced are beginning to change and it took a drop into the bottom 3 to see what certain players are made of.

I think it is good to see Lucas receiving some praise. Normally he is responsible when we get beat, yet apparently plays no part when we win. He is performing admirably this season, and appears to have already won the battle against Poulsen who seemed earmarked to replace him.
